AOL to offer free software, services
Time Warner has announced that AOL will undergo business model changes. The company will put an emphasis on free services and software in order to rake in more revenue from online advertising.
The AOL transition is set to be completed in early September, and the services to be offered for free include e-mail, instant messaging, a local phone number with unlimited incoming calls as well as safety and security features. AOL said it would continue to offer dial-up Internet access but will not aggressively market the service.According to CNet, AOL will become more similar to Yahoo, offering a media portal with free content and communication tools. Interestingly, the move also follows Google's purchase of a 5% stake in AOL last year.
