1TB hard drives 'likely' before next year
If Seagate's 750GB Barracuda 7200.10 hard drive doesn't have quite enough capacity for you, Hitachi GST's Senior VP of product strategy and marketing Bill Healy says desktop hard drives with 1,000GB of storage are likely to be introduced this year. Hitachi already launched a 500GB hard drive last year, and since the company is no stranger to perpendicular recording technology, increasing platter density to the requisite 200-250GB could be within its grasp. Healy says retail prices for large drives are in the 50-cent-per-gigabyte range. At that price, users could fork over something in the neighborhood of $500 for a shiny, new 1TB drive.
