Word got out last week that Intel was prepping a 45nm quad-core desktop processor called "Yorkfield" for the third quarter of 2007. New rumors now suggest Intel will also have some 45nm dual-core chips ready for that same time period. According to a post on VR-Zone, the dual-core processors in question will be dubbed "Wolfdale," will be clocked between 3.5GHz and 4.0GHz, and will feature 6MB of L2 cache, a 1,333MHz front-side bus, and a thermal envelope of 57W.
Going by previous rumors about AMD's plans for the same time frame, Wolfdale may face off against a 65nm "Antares" chip based on AMD's new architecture that will also launch in the third quarter of next year. Antares will supposedly run at 2.0-2.9GHz with 512KB of L2 cache per core, 2MB of shared L3 cache, HyperTransport 3.0 support, and thermal envelopes of 35W, 65W, or 89W depending on clock speed.
