Vista to limit number of OS transfers
by Cyril Kowaliski — 2:53 PM on October 13, 2006

Following reports that Microsoft will seriously step-up its anti-piracy efforts with Windows Vista, TechWeb now says the company even intends to limit the number of times users can transfer their copy of Windows Vista over to a different machine. License terms for Windows XP Home and Professional currently leave room for users to transfer their copy of the operating system to an unlimited number of systems, provided the user only has the operating system installed on one PC at a time. However, in the license terms for all retail editions of Vista—even the $399 Ultimate flavor—Microsoft states, "The first user of the software may reassign the license to another device one time. If you reassign the license, that other device becomes the 'licensed device.'" The full Vista license terms are available here. Thanks to TR reader Stmok for the tip.
