DisplayPort 1.1 to gain HDCP support
by Cyril Kowaliski — 2:10 PM on November 3, 2006

The DisplayPort Task Group has proposed some changes to the specification for DisplayPort, an upcoming unified display interface for monitors and TVs. The 1.0 DisplayPort spec includes so-called DisplayPort Copy Protection, which encrypts content with a 128-bit ASE cipher. However, X-bit labs says the DisplayPort Task Group wants to include support for High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP,) as well. HDCP is the current standard supported by HDMI and DVI interfaces, as well as copy-protected Blu-ray and HD DVD media.

A new version of HDCP with DisplayPort support is expected to be finalized in early 2007, and it will allow HDCP-enabled products with DVI or HDMI plus DisplayPort outputs to share encryption keys.
