Microsoft has announced that Windows Vista has finally gone gold. The operating system is ready to be released to manufacturing and is now officially scheduled to hit retail stores on January 30, 2007. Volume license customers like corporations will be able to get their hands on the new OS two months earlier, on November 30. Office 2007, which went gold two days ago, is also scheduled to become available on November 30 for volume license customers and in January for retail consumers. Overall, research firm IDC predicts that Vista will be installed on 100 million PCs worldwide within the first year of release. According to Microsoft, though, only 20% of enterprise PCs will be running Vista a year after the launch—an adoption rate similar to that of Windows XP.
