We reported nearly a month ago that Toshiba was about to introduce some notebooks based on AMD's processors. Well, CNet says the Japanese PC vendor has now introduced its first AMD-based notebooks in recent history. The machines are part of a new Satellite A215 series, and they start at a relatively affordable $889.99.
At that price, Toshiba's new Satellite A215-S4757 offers a 15.4" 1280x800 display, a 1.8GHz Turion 64 X2 TL-56 processor, an AMD M690V-based motherboard with Radeon X1200 integrated graphics, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250GB hard drive, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a dual-layer DVD burner, and a built-in camera. The system weighs in at 6.29lbs (2.85kg) and comes pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium x86. Users can also cough up $1,249 for the Satellite A215-S4767, although that doesn't seem to get you more than a processor upgrade to a 2.2GHz Turion 64 X2 TL-64 processor.
According to CNet, Toshiba's decision to hop on the AMD bandwagon is due to consumer and retailer demand. However, the site suspects the move also has something to do with the Japan Fair Trade Commission, which ordered Intel to stop offering rebates to PC vendors as incentives to make them limit their use of AMD processors. As we learned last month, AMD-based notebooks should account for 20% of Toshiba's notebook sales in the U.S. and Europe.
