AMD denies rumors of further processor outsourcing
Early this morning, we published a story about an FBR analyst report that claimed Taiwanese foundry TSMC would start producing microprocessors for AMD in the second quarter of 2008. An AMD spokeswoman has since contacted us with the following statement to contradict the FBR report:
AMD maintains strong foundry relationships with Chartered for MPU production and TSMC for GPU and chipset production.According to the spokeswoman, Mark Osborne over at Fabtech "hit the nail on the head" with the following blog post, which advises readers to take AMD-related rumors from financial analysts "with a pinch of salt." Osborne says the financial analyst community counts few AMD friends and "many more aligned with bigger rival Intel."AMD’s engagement with these foundry partners is unchanged:
1. Chartered will continue producing AMD x-86 microprocessors, augmenting AMD fab operations in Dresden with flexible capacity.
2. TSMC will continue producing AMD’s leading-edge graphics and chipset products and there have been no changes to the relationship.
