Microsoft to offer ad-supported Works suite
Microsoft is set to offer an ad-supported version of its Works 9 software suite in the next few months. Ads will be displayed when users are working on documents and spreadsheets, although it's unclear exactly what form those ads will take. To keep things fresh, Works will be able to update its pool of ads whenever users go online. Ads will still be displayed when users are offline, though.
Works 8 currently sells for $40 and offers word processing, spreadsheet, and calendar apps in addition to basic database functionality. Of course, if you're looking for a free office application suite and don't want to endure advertising, OpenOffice.org is available for free.
