Rumors have been swirling around AMD's fabrication plans for its upcoming Fusion processor for quite a while now, but the folks at DigiTimes have learned new information that appears to be the most plausible so far. According to sources at motherboard makers who spilled the beans to DigiTimes, either AMD itself or its processor manufacturing partner Chartered Semiconductor will make Fusion's microprocessor part, while Taiwanese foundry TSMC will churn out Fusion's graphics processor element. Fusion's microprocessor chip will be manufactured using 45nm process technology, and Fusion's GPU chip will be built using TSMC's 55nm process. The two chips will then be fitted together on the same package by a "packaging and testing plant."
For reference, AMD plans to introduce its first 45nm processors in the middle of next year. TSMC announced back in late March that it was ready to kick off production of 55nm graphics processors, although the first retail products based on the technology may not hit stores until early next year.
