Microsoft extends Windows 9x support to 2006
Citing customer dependency on the dated OS, Microsoft has extended the support period for Windows 98, 98 SE, and ME until June 30, 2006.
"Microsoft made this decision to assist our customers worldwide who are still dependent upon these operating systems and to provide Microsoft more time to communicate its product lifecycle support guidelines in a handful of markets -- particularly smaller and emerging markets," said Microsoft Australia's senior Windows desktop product marketing manager, Danny Beck.The article doesn't mention whether Microsoft will extend system builder license availability into 2006, but I hope not. Microsoft no longer offers Windows 98 or ME licenses, and is scheduled to cut 98 SE licensing for Canadian and US system builders on March 31 of this year.
Surprisingly, almost 9% of TR's page requests come from systems running Windows 9x; let's hope those users don't wait until 2006 to upgrade.
