AMD makes X2, Turion price cuts official
AMD has officially cut prices on its Athlon 64 X2 lineup, discounting the chips by as much as 20%. Prices were also reduced on a number of mobile processors, including the entire Turion 64 ML line. The Turion 64 ML-44 actually received the biggest cut, falling in price by nearly 33%.
In the wake of AMD's official cuts comes a rumor that Opteron 200-series prices will fall dramatically next month. The Inquirer has the goods:
The 265 currently costs about $700 and that price is set to cascade down to $341. The 270 costs $864 as we speak, and in mid Feb the price is likely to tumble to $476.Some Opteron 200-series chips currently cost more than twice as much as their single-socket counterparts, and while the rumored price cuts wouldn't do away with the 200-series' price premium, they could significantly lessen its sting.Then the 275, which costs over a gigahertz of money at $1,063, will become a $700 part. Lastly, but far from leastly, the 280 will fall from its high $1,300 podium to $865.
