blog functionality

I’ve started working on some of the code that drive the website. There’s a fair amount of cruft that’s built up over the years, and some serious spring cleaning to be done to make all the features of the site operate correctly. Updating a lot of older IE-specific javascript and getting the site to pass a validator are some longer term goals of mine.

In the short term a feature Scott’s been asking for is staff blogs. Although the code fro the site may be sagging in places, the foundation is very solid. The engine that drives dynamic news content was very easy to extend to provide a basic blog facility for TR staff.

So here it is, I’ve hacked this together on a devlopment server and it seems to work. Here’s hoping it’s OK in prod… as long as this post doesn’t show up on the front page I guess I’m in good shape.

I guess our feeds are consumed far and wide. I wish I had at least spellchecked the post first ๐Ÿ™

Blog entries no longer go out in the feeds now, but it looks like google is still caching it.

lol, I just finished writing another bit, a summary of blogs with a reply count, like the top tpoics part on the main page. I ran it and wondered why there was 1 reply ๐Ÿ™‚

      Thanks for helping me test

I love RSS too. But I am only receiving the titles on my TR feeds ๐Ÿ™ not description or any other content of the articles/news at all.
Is the TR’s RSS feed designed like this or is there something wrong?
I am receiving it via the Google Desktop’s sidebar.

Nothing wrong with your reader, that’s all that’s in the feeds. I think we keep them light to minimize performance impact. If people want more information in the feed I think we can do that, but we’ll need to make sure we don’t kill the server doing it.

Feeds are light due to lack of effort, not server load concerns. Better feeds would be great to have.
