TR on Facebook

No, really.  I went and made a TR page on Facebook tonight.  Perhaps not the best-advised of actions, but it seemed like the thing to do.  Check it out, if you’re into that sort of thing.

So, when will we start seeing pictures of the staff in scandalous poses?

Yeah I’m a fan now. Nice staff photos but… who is the guy with glasses? Is that Scott or Geoff? (I’m guessing Scott)

Why do I have some feeling that Jordan spearheaded this?

You guys gotta tag the photos though!

The bad part is that I nearly miss lots of parties that people send invites ONLY through Facebook. Luckily, I know how to talk to people in real life, so avoid being an outcast completely.

Odd how that works. It used to be that people like us who were computer enthusiasts and spent out lives on computers were considered the social outcasts. Now, it’s the ‘popular’, non-techie people who spend most of their lives on Facebook (and similar online activities like TXTing all over), leaving those of us techies, who value human contact over digital, as the social outcasts yet again. We can’t win. Somehow, I like it that way.

EDIT: Oops, meant to reply to #30.

I get the need to reach new audiences, but I just think the whole thing is silly. A group I work with took the plunge last year. I’m not sure if it has helped yet.

Several of my friends have combined the major players (MySpace, Facebook, Youtube) into MyFaceInATube.

We’re still trying to figure out how to include Twitter in the name.

We just have “facespace” or “myface”, I never thought of Youtube as being social networking. I can see elitist nerds looking down at it, though, so I guess it fits.

Goddamn, another one has fallen to the idiocy that is the social-networking phenomenon…and yet, I valiantly (and without difficulty) resist this retarded trend.

Or, as my father calls it, SPACEBOOK! He, out of ignorance and humor, has combined the words “Myspace” and “Facebook.”

He threatens my little brother that he will make a “Spacebook” profile, then my brother could be his “space friend” or “cosmonaut.” It gets a laugh around my house.

      • FireGryphon

Perhaps, but TR shouldn’t do all of that at once. Surely, the new Facebook presence will draw new readers, and since Facebook isn’t a primarily tech-savvy network, our community will have to absorb a lot of new members who aren’t geeky enthusiasts. What I’m trying to say is, I hope TR does all this stuff one at a time, so that our community can absorb the newbies and accept them before another influx from a new medium comes.

I am fearing the worst. All the ignorant n00bs swarming the forums. 🙁

            +1, sir.

Besides, if all the smart people become fans, their smart friends might join. It could be a net gain for the forums if the seemingly-intelligent denizens of the forum stop going full-retard at the concept of social networking.

            • PerfectCr

Yeah, I am not sure I get all the hate for social networking. Facebook is infinitely better than MySpace. I use LinkedIn as well.

            • FireGryphon

I just love the holier than thou, condescending attitude that people take sometimes.

I resist a popular fad, and get called a retard. Way to think things through, d.

            • PerfectCr

If you think these networking sites are a “social fad”, you haven’t been using them properly or in a professional context, especially LinkedIn. But if it makes you feel better to put them down, by all means, continue.

            • derFunkenstein

no, I didn’t call you a retard – I said that people turn into something less than the otherwise-intelligent folk that they are as soon as social networking gets brought up.

To think things like Facespace are a fad is incredibly short-sighted, and if you insist on keeping TR solely for yourself (and the people who have already found it), you’re damning them to eternal obscurity.

Just like when people go ga-ga over their favorite band “selling out”. No, it’s called “popularity”. You’re smarter than that, don’t be a fool.

            • FireGryphon

“To think things like Facespace are a fad is incredibly short-sighted”

I’m basing this on the fact that MySpace used to be /the/ thing to do, and now everyone (except the 12-year-olds) have gone to FaceBook. When the next social networking site opens up, people will switch to that one. Now, MySpace and Facebook may still be around, but so is Brittany Spears — another fad.

“and if you insist on keeping TR solely for yourself (and the people who have already found it), you’re damning them to eternal obscurity.”

You’re delusional. I never said anything even close to this. I expressed concern that the multitudes of non-techie people would come to this site. I did not say that TR shouldn’t advertise in as many places as possible, just that they shouldn’t do it all at once.

You’re using awfully strong language, too, in response to what was for me (and imagine for most of the people commenting along these lines) a lighthearted jab at the ridiculousness that is MySpace and Facebook. It seems you interpreted all the comments here to be against advertising on those services, whereas we were really just commenting on the services themselves. Scott can advertise wherever he wants, and the more exposure for the site, the better.

Assuming the Facebook link is going to draw a lot more n00bs, then it is the speed of things going downhill that will affect us. Before natural selection in the forums will weed out the people who should not be here and life goes on. However, if there is a swarm of such people, then the forum will be drowned in all the trainwreck noises and the good people will just say screw it and leave.

You’ve GOT to be kidding me. Every single person I know is on Facebook, and now Tech Report is? I don’t have Facebook, and I won’t get it. Imagine that: I’ll be the only person on the planet not to have a Facebook page. BOOYAH!

I keep telling people I’ll join Facebook as soon as I find a way to create an anti-facebook facebook group. Essentially create a facebook group without joining.

It’s dumb, I barely use it.

        • Ozenmacher

I was a hold out for a long time too, but I gave in a year or so ago. All in all, not a bad way to keep up with a lot of friends I don’t get to see or talk to otherwise–like old college friends. If you are worried about privacy, you can basically set everything to high so nothing more than basic information is present. FB is not nearly as bad as Myspace.
