Slight delay on this week’s podcast

We’re looking at another great TR Podcast episode for this week, with discussions ranging from the affects of GPGPU on GPU lifespan to the atrocious bandwidth caps coming to a city near you. However, we’ll be releasing this episode tomorrow, on Sunday, instead of our normal Saturday posting.

Rather than spend the day editing audio and writing show notes, I’ll be doing live coverage of the AppalachLAN gaming event hear in my home town of Boone, NC for my radio program. Dispite our small town status, the local university manages to host one of the largest gaming events in the south east and as part of my radio show – Digital Life Radio – I’m doing live video/audio streaming coverage. If you want to tune in, I’d suggest listening in around 3pm ET when we’ll do an hour of gaming discussion, product reviews, and tech news. Head over to for more info.

I’m pretty interested in Wasson’s take on Callisto and Regor.

I was confused by Anandtech’s review. He does some strange comparisons sometimes, but then does not do the expected comparison; for instance, he put a Prescott — two Prescotts actually (!) — in the review (why?) but he didn’t put a Brisbane in the review. That does /not/ make sense to me. And he did not put an E8x00 in there either… but he put a Sempron in there. It was just a totally strange selection of CPUs, I thought. If you’re going to buy an AMD dual core, you are going to buy Callisto, Regor, or Brisbane – so, dude, where’s the Brisbane? On the other hand, it is nice to see yesteryear’s chart-toppers compared to the current stuff, so it was still interesting.

Anyway, they look quite good for the price. Still, the Penryn Core 2 wins on IPC, so at any given clock, the Core2 wins. It looks like the Regor and Callisto need 200-300 MHz to pull even.

Is Boone TW Roadrunner country? I know Winston-Salem is, or was when I lived there a good while back.

Looking forward to it. I don’t usually listen to it until Sunday anyway so that works fine for me.

I did some folding on my HD3870 and it ended up completely dying after only a year or so of use, so I’m definitely interested in that. It could have just been a coincidence, but I’ve never had a card die so fast.
