John Carmack is probably one of the greatest minds out there currently and I honestly have no idea wtf the 3rd frame is trying to say.
sorry, i don’t get it.
i guess it’s implying he just used random numbers (the 12 sided die)
but the magic 8-ball is yes/no/maybe
govt contracts seem irrelevant
taking a LOD off – i don’t get this at all
openGL for dummies – this seems the worst. he’s one of the world’s experts on the topic
the comic seems to be trying to make 5 jokes at once, 4 of which don’t make sense.
Back in C.S., I had a tutor, [url=http://dk.linkedin.com/in/theoengell<]Theo[/url<], who did his Master's thesis on methods for simulating and visualizing fire in 3D graphics (we're talking the last millenium here, folks). During his thesis work, he wrote to Carmack and asked for some advice on some maths/physics/rendering issues. Now, this tutor had been demo coding since he was a kid, had an IQ of well past 150, followed extra math courses above and beyond the nominal course load and generally knew what he was doing.
Carmack replied with some extremely elegant math that this guy had never seen and which totally blew his mind. For the record, he and his thesis partner aced their thesis presentation and received a standing ovation from the external censor and the audience.
Now, I hate to sound like a rabid, grovelling fanboi, but please think twice before dissing Carmack's math and programming skills -- the guy is literally a rocket scientist, which can't be said for many of us.
That all well and good, but it’s been a decade since their last truly great game, which is what gamers care about. I’m sure he’s a genius but that doesn’t mean everything he touches turns to gold.
Even Einstein (surely one of the greatest mind’s ever) struggled in his later years with trying to unify physics, and stubbornly didn’t want to accept quantum mechanics as reality, despite overwhelming evidence.
And yet his theory of reality still holds water despite not being based on quantum mechanics. Hawking and the like are still trying to figure that one out.
So your mate Theo basically cheated on his thesis?…
Its not like a thesis is done in a room with the door locked. I had tons of input on mine, heck it was a group thesis. I even had a sponsor.
So it turns out that he thought about how to solve all that, and he ended up coming with a prob, gr8, and now he’s blaming drivers. Because Carmak is a genius when the things come from id, and don’t work well, the problem is always with others.
How many people have raged about this game? I think all have been quite patient given the circumstances. The intention to fix it is there, it’s just a matter of time, me thinks.
Good one 🙂
Now, to be fair, we need a comic about what went on in the AMD driver dev dept.
No, we don’t. As far as I know Nvidia users also had the problems with this game.
We didn’t crash or fill the screen with currupted data.
Nvidia had/have problems, but AMD’s problems are far, far worse, and well documented by this point in time. Let’s not forget the hotfix driver screw up.
Yea, that was a big screw-up by ATI/AMD to rush those untested drivers, and their uses did have more severe problems, but it still doesn’t change the fact that Nvidia users also had some problems with that game – they also initially benefited from manually overriding the “auto-balancer” (or whatever “random number” – based feature Carmack used to determine the texture resolutions) settings in .cfg files.
That’s different though. There’s a difference between getting the same wonky autobalancer, and driver departments going herpdyderp. Why? Because the autobalancer is a RAGE component, not a driver components. Autobalancer issues has absolutely nothing at all to do with AMD/nVidia issues.
Seriously, you’re comparing apples and oranges…
How about developers release games that don’t require driver updates for each one? DirectX and OpenGL are standards. Games that use said standards on drivers that conform to said standards should just work. If a game doesn’t work properly on AMD or nVidia cards when it’s released, to me it means that the game is broken and wasn’t properly tested.
Drivers that conform to standards? Clearly you’ve never dealt with GPU manufacturers… 😉
And OpenGL has always been a massive case of wtflol on AMD. They just didn’t seem to care about it, and applications that use it (I play a simulator that has UI in OGL and simulation in DX) suffered massively by AMD apathy.
Can someone explain the “Government Contracts and You” book in this context? I’m missing something.
it’s the art of “estimating.”
D&D multi-sided dice FTW!
I had one that scored 16-20 about 50% of the time. Had five 20’s in a row.
Yeah, I think you were in my group. But you would never show other people your roll 🙂
This not has more sarcasm than humor.. 🙂
must. resist. grammar. troll.
Hmm.. I must be tired.
You know there’s an edit button, right?
This has moar sarcasm that humour. Thare i haz not fixed it.
Good stuff. Especially the “magic 8-ball” and the dice “tools”.
