Video Wall Tech Options: Which One is Right for You?

Some people look good on television and others…do not. Video wall tech faces a similar challenge. Choose the tech that is right for you.

Your television studio has certain precise backdrop needs where video wall tech is concerned. There are three common technologies in video wall technology. They are direct view LED, LCD, and rear-projection cubes or RPC.

There are certain essential factors in determining the right fit for your video wall. Here are six to consider.

Factor #1: The Gap in the Screen

In many television studios, programming is stretched across the entire backdrop. As a result, gaps between individual panels, resulting in a black raster pattern, are undesired.

LED is the clear winner in this category. It’s a perfectly seamless technology. LED is a favored technology for many television studios. This is because it allows content to be stretched across a wide backdrop canvas without interruption.

When the camera is recording in close proximity to the backdrop, RPCs have a tiny gap between individual cubes, resulting in a thin raster.

To keep the electronics in place, most LCD video walls feature a bezel around each panel. This produces a greater inter-screen gap. The Barco UniSee, on the other hand, is completely without a bezel. This makes it the LCD video wall with the narrowest inter-screen gap on the market.

Direct view LED also receives good marks. This is particularly true for horizontal viewing angles. In addition, it holds its brightness the best of all technologies. The ideal usage for rear-projection cubes is in static installations, like news studios.

Factor #3: Reflections

Lighting is crucial in television studios. In addition, it takes a lot of time and work to get it just so.

One of the most important aspects of this exercise is to avoid light reflections in the background. When it comes to reflections, however, there is a significant disparity between the various systems.

When a bright light shines on the glass display surface of an LCD, it functions as a mirror. A filming camera should never be directly in line with reflected light. This can be remedied with a savvy studio setup.

LED light scatters in all directions. Therefore, it is more dependent on the total amount of ambient light than on the position of the lighting sources. As a result, the location of the light point is of secondary importance. Therefore, in a studio, less light means better contrast.

When it comes to reflection, rear-projection cubes excel since the projection screen absorbs the majority of the light.

Factor #4: Creative Setups Require Flexibility

Because the broadcast market is naturally creative, the backdrop must support that creativity. Every technology has its own set of characteristics in this area.

LED tiles are small and simple to use. As a result, they’re ideal for constructing a curved setup. In addition, they allow for more imaginative, non-rectangular shapes. Studio set designers’ options are greatly expanded as a result of this. This allows them to think outside the “rectangular” box.

LCD, on the other hand, is the most easily equipped technology with a touch kit. As a result, it’s ideal for usage as an interactive wall. These are becoming increasingly popular in news and television presentations.
