Re: Finally confirmation that Intel is going back to solder!

Great pic! What I like most is that Shutterstock apparently does not have a single employee that can recognize the multitude of problems with this photo. You can't expect a tech company that sells millions of stock photos to actually have their tech-literate staff see even a tiny fraction of them p...

OK all, if you don't have info or assistance to post; don't post. Thanks for listening. I'm going to close my account. Are we still talking about the fragility of pins on LGA mobos? What is this 2006? OP said he just built a new rig last week and it sounds like it is his first encounter with 1155 socket. Don't be a dick. I forgot this place is patrolled by the feelings-police where every user is an undercover feeli...

Re: Need new android phone - Galaxy Nexus?

I have a Galaxy Nexus and like it well enough. I think, for $350, it's hard to find a better value Android (and maybe any) phone right now if you don't want a contract. The Galaxy SII has slightly better hardware specs, but you'll likely not notice it. The Nexus is still more than capable at runnin...

Re: So What's the Status of Things, Folding Wise?

For me it is because super computers these days are so fast. Just two or three years ago, and especially like 5 years ago, the FAH network was way way more powerful than the fastest super computer, but these days many super computers are way more powerful in FLOPS and also way way more efficient bec...

Re: On how people get rich...

But why would you think that's a good indication of the future at all? The economy and the world is WAY different than it has been, and it's not just "bigger" it's different. I'm not depending on the appearance of the economy being the same, on things like the continued importance of foss...

Re: On how people get rich...

You could put it in equity markets, but then you never know how much you're getting every year. No, but 120 years of historical evidence tells me it'll likely be around a 4% real return each year. I won't be spending more in the years that the equity markets outperform that estimation; take that, c...

Re: On how people get rich...

At a 4% withdrawal rate, which is likely to preserve principal forever, it's $28k per year. It's a tight budget, but it's doable. But who is gonna sell you a perpetuity for 4% annual rate in this interest rate environment?? You could put it in equity markets, but then you never know how much you're...

I want to retire at 30 with no debt and a ~$700k portfolio. I'm on track. Ish. Probably going to be hard to live for another 60 years on just the returns from $700k. Haha yea... Re: On how people get rich...

I do know how it works there. It's the same as the rest of the country. Like where I live, for example. You add your federal tax rate, your state tax rate, and your local tax rate. It's not that tough. Since state and local add up to 10.5%, you would have to be in the 35% bracket for your total tax...

Re: On how people get rich...

The top new york city and state tax rates are 3.648% and 6.85%, so the only way you could be getting taxed 'literally 45% at least' is if you make more than $388k after deductions before you receive your bonus for the year. I don't think you know how it works here man.... there's also federal tax. ...

The median household income in the very wealthiest census tract in the city is $188k/year. $300k is rich, even for NYC. Not when shoebox apartments rent for $10,000 a month! :P I'm renting a ROOM (thought pretty nice sized) for 1350 a month a block from Columbus Circle!I got a bonus and literally 4...

It also depends on the vocation you choose. It's much easier to become rich (based on probability) by choosing to be an investment banker than many other jobs. I'm an investment banker (a young one), and it's not easy to get rich in this industry anymore just looking at the people I work with and t...

Not until you can find a way to bring gravity into the quantum world. Start with finding gravitons and gravitational waves.

Re: Quick and dirty multithreading?

Your IPC overhead will likely eat up any benefits of binding to a specific processor on Windows. If you are accessing the same files from different processes you still need to synchronise file access between the processes. Synchronisation objects aren't that hard to understand once you get a handle...

I want more control because the Windows thread scheduler seems to bounce around threads for no reason. If I make it multithreaded, then I am at the mercy of whatever crazy algorithms have been programmed into the scheduler. Yea that is true :/ Though I'm never sure keeping a process pinned to a sin...

Re: Quick and dirty multithreading?

This might be a very dumb question but I thought the return of time investment on multithreaded programming isnt all that great unless your problem is easily parallelizable. So why go that route? Why not just concentrate on increasing the single threaded utilization of all the cores by dividing you...

Re: Quick and dirty multithreading?

I was wondering. If I created four single threaded console based C or C++ programs and set each one's affinity to a certain core in my system, that would keep my four cores fully utilized, right? To minimize I/O latencies, I could use a ram drive, seeing how cheap ram has become ( I have 32GB DDR3-...

But doesn't that depend on the engine? Like aren't some engines really easily and fast to develop for like Unreal 3? I thought the point of having an awesome engine to generate these graphics is that the engine is largely a fixed cost and you just need to develop the same game you would on a crappie...
