And this is why I lurk in these forums. I learned something new tonight, gentlemen. And that, folks, is a very good night.

Cheers!

Re: XP's slow death is forcing my hand.

Ugh. Switching from Quadro to GeForce doesn't bother me any, the things I beat a GPU with are more often games anyways, but losing the option for a normal sized disk (2.5") bugs me. The second kid means that my "game-playing" days are long in the rear-view mirror; I would simply spec...

Re: XP's slow death is forcing my hand.

Just throwing out some contrast, but I left Thinkpad behind recently and have been very happy about it, so I thought I'd share. I got a Dell Latitude E6530, and it can be easily configured to hit all your marks. . Wow - that is exactly why I asked y'all here. Thanks for the pointer. It's a nice-loo...

Re: XP's slow death is forcing my hand.

Many thanks, all. With the coupons and the work discount, the y510P would probably come out to <$1k. I can't find a W for less than $1500 I have gotten so spoiled with the SSD/multi-threaded compile. On the same machine, a single-threaded full compile of my main simulation with a mechanical HD takes...

Re: XP's slow death is forcing my hand.

I made the mistake of replacing my old thinkpad with Ideapad once... (bulky old SL500 with U410) build quality is noticebly worse on ideapads, keybord sucks, etc. ... So I returned U410 and bought a Thinkpad again... T430u this time and I am realy happy with it so far. The new keybord isnt bad at a...

XP's slow death is forcing my hand.

Hi all, The pending death of windows XP is making me think about finally upgrading my beloved 7+-year old Thinkpad -- my main development machine for data fusion algorithms and studies of complex and nonlinear systems. I currently have a Merom in my Thinkpad (2.16GHz T5800 Core2 Duo, 65nm) with a sm...

Re: Buyer Brokers

They're not making money if you're not buying This is quite true. The original Freakonomics book -- while sometimes mixing up causation and correlation -- has a whole chapter on why buyer agents rush through your sale and milk their own sale for every penny. I suggest you peruse a copy of the book ...

Re: Car with best 0-60 for under $25k, new or used

2. Why the low 0-60? Mainly for merging, passing, getting into traffic. Not so much about "fun" as it is about being able to get into / out of traffic "comfortably." My commute area is one of the worst in the country - DC traffic. Rt 7, 267, 495, 95, 66, etc. I commute in the sa...

Re: Car with best 0-60 for under $25k, new or used

Ooops. Sorry, didn't mean to upset the Subie contingent. I like the cars, and considered a WRX for a while, but DC traffic & weather isn't exactly conducive to a small AWD turbo needing premium gas. I didn't know the non-turbo ran on 87. Good to know when I shop for a car for the kid.

Re: Car with best 0-60 for under $25k, new or used

CVT's -- while theoretically more efficient and generally good in practice -- really kill driving enjoyment. If you are considering a new V6 Pony car (a good choice, IMHO, based on what we interpret to be your needs), then you must enjoy driving at least somewhat. There is something very satisfying ...

If you really want to cheap out, however, look to one of the automakers that went bankrupt recently, but still has a huge parts cache sitting around and a loyal fanbase. Funny you mention that. Just yesterday, Saab gets an investor in China to restart production. Yes, 'tis a shame. First Volvo (Gee...

We all want new. If you really want to cheap out, however, look to one of the automakers that went bankrupt recently, but still has a huge parts cache sitting around and a loyal fanbase. I have been quite happy with my 2006 SAAB 9-5 Aero. ⋅  0-60 < 7 sec. ⋅  ~270 hp/~270 torques ...

Re: Why do i get raped if i have my own phone?

Would you be willing to pay a lower rate in exchange for being locked in to a contract? That would level the playing field, and be the most "fair" to everyone. Yes! That is the relevant question here. If he can't do that, then he'd have a much more reasonable complaint. But, of course, on...

Re: Car question - extra hp??

I never understood why questions about cars immediately bring arguments about which cars are better at racing and why you suck if you buy x/y/z model / brand, or referring to people's cars as a "grocery getter." My car is plenty fast at 190hp, just wanna let her breathe easier. Hear, hear...

Re: Looking for I/O bound compile test for benching

Why not simply use something (anything, really) that's compiled with the Boost uBlas templated matrix library with a make -j directive? The dependencies for a relatively simple (proprietary, alas) matrix math application has >400 header files. I'm sure that with a few more includes, we can get >1000...

what you're describing is known as guess and check, or, alternatively, the scientific method. *cries* With these therapies where the mechanism for efficacy is unknown (acupuncture, fung-shui, magnets, homeopathy, theraputic "touch"), the placebo effect is the only benefit. Since you are a...

Re: Upgrading from single core to quad core - experiences?

How are Boost's math/matrix libraries craptacular? I thought the entire community reviewed it? :o This probably belongs in developer's den, so I apologize in advance. Yes, Boost is quite thoroughly peer-reviewed and follows somebody's idea of a standard, but let me point out how it's actually used ...

Re: Upgrading from single core to quad core - experiences?

I jumped from an Athlon XP (Barton) to a Q6600. So yeah. There was a slight, nearly perceptible difference. Plus, my main application is a multi-threaded compile of >30k lines of C++ using the craptacular Boost math/matrix libraries. Compile times went from 1hr45min to 15min total. I barely h...

Re: Anyone have an Eee PC ? update added HD Tach and random stuf

Much thanks! I only need a platform to edit code; not run it. I've got a good desktop or two to do the actual science on. It would also be nice to write up the results -- so I really only need something to run xemacs/notepad/word-like substances. The screen and keyboard are known quantities. Much of...

What kind of battery life are you getting? I've got an upcoming business trip from DC to Hawaii that I'm (honestly) not looking forward to. I'd like to get one and do actual (coding, science) work during the trip.

Memory: Mushkin XP2-6400 2x2GB If my memory serves, Mushkin is voltage hungry. Try increasing the voltage to about 2.1V instead of the "stock/default". I had a similar problem (though with OCZ) that prevented all of WinXP/Ubuntu/UBCD4Win from installing with random memory errors, even tho...

Holy hell... that makes 4WD kinda useless... You're better with LSD then  Not really -- on very soft or slushy stuff, you really do not want the LSD as it will send all axle power to whichever wheel has grip; this turns out to be none of above. For serious off-road work or driving through san...
