Whilst I'm here of course, a life update for the curious. - Finished uni 2007 - Lucked into a job in finance (housemate heard of it through a family member but had committed to his PhD) using a craz...

Thanks, I only had all my work from this morning set up at the time. Your funny reference to an old game contains nothing to help me diagnose what went wrong.

Re: Favourite hammers

Oh man, there's a guy at work I sometimes ask for a hand with the odd task.

He is usually convinced that the answer is perl. Sometimes he is right.

Usually I give up and write it in half the time in python - another of my hammers :-D

As in "... everything looks like a nail" If you're anything like me, you have a couple of programming tools you use more often than most, or try to use over some other solution, because they're just that awesome. Some linux-based ones to start you off: Since I spend a fair amount of time w...

Re: DRM rears its ugly head in Avatar Blu-Ray

I'm sorry, TV is too shallow for you, but Avatar is a worthy purchase? Really? For what it's worth,I enjoyed it as a complete departure from reality (though frankly the last half hour brought me crashing back to Earth). Then again, I used to think Swordfish was the best thing since sliced bread, so...

Re: "Advanced level" programming text

Just read about 50 pages of "The art of UNIX programming", that seems like a very decent book to read once every couple of months :-) As I was reading the mantras in the first chapter, I kept thinking about good and bad designs I'd done, much in the same way I did when I started reading De...

Re: "Advanced level" programming text

C Programming Language Think that may have been the first programming book I ever bought. I recall it as a stunning trip through how a computer "does stuff". Even now when I program for days in C#, I think in terms of pointers at some level. if your reaction to C++ is "damn, that's a...

"Advanced level" programming text

Hi all, long time no see :-) So I've been working at a company for 2 years now, doing all kinds of programming in the following: - SQL Server queries - Functional programming - APL-inspired functional language (not sure I can be more specific than that) - C# - Some C++ (Damn but that's a complicated...

I've had one broken for me, does that count?

My sister did it when i was three, upper right forearm. Still have a notch or a nobble or something where it never healed right - therefore I can't throw stuff for love nor money.

Re: dymt reloaded

So the only real hope I have left on this one is some kind of overflow error? We're at 13k posts atm. What are the chances that they used an unsigned 16-bit int to store that one? In which case we'd be a third of the way there!

If they used an unsigned 32-bit int ... Get typing huh?

Re: dymt reloaded

My brother's broken at least 2 ribs, bones in both feet, left wrist and the last two fingers on his right hand, all at different times. He says the healing process is worse than the breaking so I don't think it's abnormal. And no, I don't know how he breaks so much. Perhaps he is too xxxtreme? Inci...

Youtube video of drive powering up.

From the sounds of dead hard drives I found on Wikipedia, it sounds like the drive motor is knackered (which is why it seems to almost spin up a couple of times there). The read/write head is probably useless now though also :-D

Re: oh ffffffff....izzlesticks

I am normally so careful about ensuring it is off before moving it. I was tired this time, stayed an hour late at work on Friday and just wanted to get to parents house by that point. Now doing a post mortem on hard drive :D Edit: Based on this page , I suspect my drive heads are knackered. I was ho...

So Friday was a bad day. Went back to my parents and got stuck in the traffic from two completely separate traffic accidents. 120 motorway miles in 4 1/2 hours. Before all of that excitement though, I went and packed a bag of stuff to take home. Including my external hard drive. Which is it really h...

Re: I have no idea what to look for in a mobile..

In terms of network, if you do a lot of texting, you might want to look at Orange's Dolphin plan. Texts all month + either 500 or 750 (IIRC) anytime any network minutes, depending on how much you wish to spend per month. This would of course preclude you from choosing the G1 "google phone"...

Re: What Google Chrome Needs

Then there's Firefox. I personally love the way that Google Chrome is laid out. I rather have my tabs at the upper part, almost like Opera but Opera is a junk web browser. Chrome gives me the most out of a web page on my laptop out of every browser. I'm hooked. I like the tabs there too. In actual ...

As long as they don't touch you, consider it fine and ... generally considerate of those behind. That's the most worrying part. Typically these people pull right up to you and stop dead from 15mph about two metres away from you. It's incredibly distracting to watch in your rear-view mirror, not to ...

I have been giving Chrome a chance but what I find weird is that after I installed it my HD starts going nuts. OK, so I'd really like to play with a few different operating systems here and there. I've always been partial to a bit of linux, and I'm giving serious consideration to setting up a distro purely for hacking some open source stuff together in my spare time (I'm still fairly green at this programmin...

Re: Things That Annoy...

So I've been driving for just short of two months now, and here's the ones I can't stand. There may be a theme. People who know you're about to pull in again after overtaking on a motorway, so they tailgate you to within an inch of your rear bumper, because they're too damn stupid to hold the correc...
