Re: Cool and quiet: Undervolting a 1060 or 580?

I don't have much experience with Afterburner or other 3rd party apps for tweaking Nvidia GPUs, but I do like AMD's built-in WattMan utility that runs within the driver already. I know the default Afterburner is simply a voltage/frequency offset [from max speed assumedly], whereas WattMan directly ...

Re: Handbrake: expensive old CPU versus new budget CPU

My suspicion is that you'll want at least as many cores. Plus, thanks to the Ryzen revolution, cores are cheap. Look at a cheap 4 core Ryzen. A Pentium G5400 is $80 on Newegg. A quad core Ryzen 3 2200G is $95. Plus you get Integrated Vega graphics with that. The architectural and instruction set im...

Re: Build For $1500?

Given a budget of $1500 +/- $100, what would you build these days for a gamer/coder? (Just CPU, mobo, RAM, SSDs and video card) And, is there anything in the next 3 months that would definitely postpone this build? Late to the party, but I have some thoughts: 1. Wait for Ryzen 3000 CPUs. 2. Ultrawi...

Risk of Rain 2 . It's in early access but already much more fun and polished than the majority of AAA cashgrabs out these days. Third person 3D roguelike co-op shooter, with lots of items and character classes to unlock. I haven't had a chance to play it in multiplayer yet, but reports for MP have ...

Re: Why are game consoles so efficient??

Efficient? The PS4 was drawing 264W at launch, and even then it was upscaling from 900p a lot of the time. Since improved with die shrinks, but I don't think they are especially electrical power, GPU power, or CPU power efficient. I do think a very small minority of first party developers can and to...

Re: The Outer Worlds goes Epic exclusive

But it forces adoption of their product, getting their foot in the door. I guess I'm one of the few who don't see it that way. I know it won't amount to much, but I'm not giving any money to developers that pull this crap (switching after promising something else). I have no ill will for games that...

Re: The Outer Worlds goes Epic exclusive

If you expect a company craven enough to bribe publishers into exclusivity on its inferior platform to have your best interests at heart in the long term, you deserve what's coming to you. When I hear "Epic exclusive," I hear "company that isn't getting my money." Another one bi...

Re: Phoenix Point goes Epic-exclusive after Fig crowdfunding based on Steam/GOG

So, recent findings indicate that Epic is datamining user's Steam account data and friends lists . Some points to consider: 1. Steam has an API for users and apps to share account data. Epic is bypassing the API and directly datamining the information from files in your steam folder. 2. Steam will n...

Re: Phoenix Point goes Epic-exclusive after Fig crowdfunding based on Steam/GOG

My objection to EGS is that they are buying up exclusivity deals to build up marketshare. By giving devs a better cut of the sale? I'm not seeing how that equates to buying up exclusivity deals. Steam and whoever could do the exact same thing if they wanted to. Heck, Discord does. If Epic was simpl...

But I don't know anything else about it. So can someone please explain to me why this is so bad? Thank...

The GPS is a good example... It doesn't allow me to say NO to toll roads. That sounds like a problem with the app you're using. What are you using - Google Maps? I would love to get a gaming laptop or something as I travel a lot. My company issued me a Dell Precision M4800 but I don't game with it as we aren't allowed to put games on them and the Quadro K1100m is a pretty lame gamer. I get pretty bored most nights as I don't watch TV and I thought about get...

The idea of possibly getting a 17" panel in a 15" laptop form-factor is rather intriguing The best "17 in laptop in a 15 in chassis" is probably the Asus Zephyrus S GX701 . Available with up to RTX 2080 Max Q, but that SKU will cost a pretty penny. Also, it's still using "o...

Re: Frametime 8gb vs 16gb ram benchmarks?

I'll buck the trend and recommend 8GB (conditionally). Also, get a motherboard with 4 slots. How much would you save by going 2-slots? $10? $20? It is absolutely not worth doing so unless ITX is a requirement. 100 BRL. It's not THAT expensive. But it's half of the amount of going for the 16GB, for ...

Re: Frametime 8gb vs 16gb ram benchmarks?

I'll buck the trend and recommend 8GB (conditionally). This. Very few games will be bottlenecked by 8 GB vs 16 GB of RAM. 99% of 3D games will be bottlenecked by a 570 vs a 580. Especially now that 580 8 GB prices are dropping to as low as $150-170, it's really not worth the savings from going with...

Maybe 3 years back, the liquid cooling liquid, started leaking onto the motherboard and graphics card. I replaced the cooler and was impressed at the time that it didn't damage anything. Looking back, maybe that caused some of these problems now. I suppose that's possible, though I kind of doubt it...

Re: Lots of Minor Issues after Graphics Card Upgrade

What's the reason for suspecting the PSU? I would assume that most of the hardware has circuitry that checks for undervolting or overvolting and responds accordingly. I saw something on the motherboard box (I still have it after all this time) that says the capacitors are rated for 30,000 hours or ...

Re: AMD: Remember When we said we'd kill Nvidia last? WE LIED!

Disappointment. It is just Vega 20 rejects that didn't make the FirePro/Frontier cut. It'll be merely contesting the 2070 at best and be undercut by it while making 2060 a good buy by comparison. I suppose it is better than nothing and Navi isn't ready yet. According to the graphs it looks to be eq...
