Re: Linux Mint 13 Maya

I am downloading the Mate version of Linux Mint 13 Maya, partially because the developers admit that Mate(a fork of gnome 2), is more stable than the Cinnamon(a customized version of Gnome 3). As much publicity as Ubuntu gets, I think Linux Mint deserves more publicity, as they don't seem to be run...

HIS 7870 IceQ 2GB

Just took the plunge on a new 7870 from HIS. Very exited as it's faster brother is one of the coolest running gfx card ever due to the awesome cooler on this baby, see Anandtech. I'm probably gonna just OC this to 1100 Mhz and 5.2 Ghz for memory and call it a day. My last card was a 4870, and it's f...

Re: VMWare ESXi on a partition?

[quote="just brew it!"]A few things... I would check whether ESXi's PCI passthrough support requires a motherboard/CPU that supports IOMMU (unless you've already got a host system that supports that). I'm not very familiar with ESXi, but it is a "bare metal" hypervisor. As such, ...

Re: Is it time to rebuild a new AMD platform?

As for intel never was fawn of them. (sry!) I don't really understand why people are fan of AMD/NVIDIA or INTEL, ultimately I doesn't make any difference because you can do everything what a normal user does on both platforms w/o problems. As a budget constrained buyer all that interests me is what...

Re: AMD A4-3300M Is this good enough for business?

AMDs opengl setup is fine, now you're just spreading fud. There is a difference between working opengl and high performance opengl in games. If AMDs gfx drivers were so bad then their firegl products wouldn't sell. Also every single Llano based system is part of the Catalyst driver program, cant say...

What makes you think they can't run CAD software very well? They have better GPUs than most professional laptops from last year including those silly quadro NVS crap that nvdia sells to people thinking they are really getting workstation graphics. The A4 is a fine multipurpose cpu+gpu combo that wil...

Re: Opteron 4176HE vs Xeon 5630L

Xeon is a faster solution unless you go for the 6 core Opterons which maybe more competitive. The AMD platform is significantly cheaper however. Also your software license is the key factor here, not the hardware.

Re: Virtual RAM drive == YES!!!

ram drives are mostly useless for most applications. Windows already buffers anything it loads into memory. What you are doing is making the the first load faster, but you are wasting the ram because now there are two copies of the same data in memory. It's nothing more than a curiosity.

You cannot win against Intel without taking chances, AMD is taking a chance on a new architecture like they took a chance on K7, x86-64, on die memory controller, SIMD, glueless MP, etc etc etc etc . Your views are shortsighted, AMD wouldn't have a chance against Intel without Bulldozer now they at ...

A PLX bridge doesn't give you more bandwidth, in fact it adds latency to your system, what it does give more flexibility due to a larger number of pci-e ports.

A lot of people on this site talk up intel a lot but they have very weird product differentiation. you need to turn on intel vt support. Vt-x is usually just called vt in bioses. In short, you should have bought a xeon :)

Opera didnt' catch on because when it came out in the beginning the app used to display adds, it also had a wonkey interface, the stigma remains. I would never use opera, its not a cool browser like chrome. Others also shouldn't use it, its not good as chrome or firefox; download safari instead if y...
