Re: Modular graphics card

If graphics card makers want to expand into the mainstream, they need to go external. Nahh, not really. Most "mainstream" users probably wouldn't upgrade the card even if it was external. It is ridiculous how many users will replace an entire PC just because it is out of disk space or has...

Re: Home FTP Server

An an alternative, if you are only occasionally sharing a few files, you can use a program like Utorrent. Just drag-and-drop a file from your computer onto the UI and it will generate a link to a torrent/magnet file, and then your Utorrent will seed the file to him. You could also send large zips fu...

Re: Dumbest Comments from Non-Tech Types

How many here have encountered people who refer to the entire PC as "the hard drive"? This seems to have been more common 10+ years ago, but I still hear it occasionally (some of these people also refer to the monitor as "the computer"). Then there's the related species of peopl...

Re: Using Google maps locations to filter DB results?

I get that UG, thanks for the input. my question is, is there a way to use Google maps to show location-relevant info, but filter the results down so it shows the nearest fast food reasturant(s) based on the rating system? let's pretend there are 200 brands like McDonalds and 20,000 stores scattered...

Using Google maps locations to filter DB results?

Ok, I have an interesting problem and can't come up with a good answer on how to even approach it. I'll give a generic example. Let's say someone had a database that rated fast food restaurants at a Corporate level. In our case, Burger King, McDonalds and Pizza hut. So Overal rating, Menu, Avg. Pric...

Can you PM me the address? I'll see if I can make it on Saturday. If I can make it, I'll bring something, but I must admit, I have preconceived notions of what you all look like, so if JBI isn't essentially Queen Latifah with a penchant for ale I'm going to be disappointed.

Re: Possible Virus: mobgifts(dot)org (DO NOT GO THERE) popup

I agree. The question is how to remove it or what it is precisely. I don't know all the details obviously, but I'd say back up the info to a PC/Google Apps and do a factory reset on the phone. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to get everything back to how it was before all this started happening...

Re: Possible Virus: mobgifts(dot)org (DO NOT GO THERE) popup

I agree. The question is how to remove it or what it is precisely. The Droid in my possession is stock, just your standard apps (weather, news, Google stuff, etc.). I've killed all apps and removed everything suspicious and will still get notifications from mobgifts(dot)org popping up now and again ...

Possible Virus: mobgifts(dot)org (DO NOT GO THERE) popups?

I had a client with a Droid phone come to me that said they had random popups from mobgifts . org (DO NOT GO THERE). Seems like some sort of mobile-device virus or something. Google searching reveals many people in the last 24-48 hours or so with this issue. Any ideas? Thanks for any help. Examples:...

That is awesome. Thanks for linking that: I hadn't heard about it. It's very cool they are actual giving some 'substance' in the form of "agents" to the mechanics of the game. And the "tens of thousands" quote is exciting. To put it in the form of an example, in the old Sim City ...

That's sort of a bizarre set of terms. If I were in your shoes: 1) Buy data protection first (flash drives, external hard drives, whatever. get that backed up) 2) Get Uninterrupted Power Supply protection for as many thing as possible Then do the other things. Sorry have to go. bbl. List your comput...

Re: I may regret it later, but....

I would and have had experience with SSDs, just not enough (15 yrs+ mechanical vs just a couple yrs SSD). What I was asking was for benchmarks. Certainly loading Windows or *nix would be faster. That's obvious. I'm talking about performance after the OS is on and things in memory and optimized. What...

Re: I may regret it later, but....

I think a sort of quasi-placebo effect might revolve around people putting clean installs on SSDs (rather than mirror some existing install or whatever from some old mechanical drive with millions of programs, etc). With the new drive and new OS install it's "FAST!" Has TR benchmarked Fire...

Re: SSD Failed - SMART settings in BIOS revived

SSD's unfortunatley do this type of thing. It can depend on the type of chip the SSD has, sometimes sandforce can refuse to boot or come up with errors. I have an OCZ agility 3 that in a raid0 array on my main machine that was acting erratic - everytime I would boot, the raid array would say the &q...

Re: SSD Failed - SMART settings in BIOS revived

I'd certainly do some SMART checks on it to see if there are any errors. You could also check the Event Viewer for i/o related issues. I don't have much direct experience with SSDs, but anytime a drive behaves out of the ordinary I'd immediately back everything up and assume it is unreliable until p...

Re: Best 32-port switch to replace Netgear Prosafe 24prt 10/

Thanks for the comments. I considered adding an 8 port switch off a 24port replacement, but why muck around if you have the money for 32-ports? Isn't it more sensible to just get a single point of failure rather than have a 24-port switch in a rack setting next to an 8-port one on a shelf? 23 cables...

Re: Huge lag when connected to work network

Agreed michael_d, but it seems like there's something messed up, like the OS is running out looking for something networked (like a printer, or a networked drive, or whatever). When the network isn't active, it just works fine, reportedly. If that's the case, it's not *necessarily* an issue with a n...

It's either 0, 14 or 20 seconds. Not 7, not 16. I've checked everything I can think of that windows monitors and nothing is happening during that time as far as I can tell. It's not pegging the CPU, hard drive, ram etc. This happens whether the file is on the network, or on the local drive . It doe...

Trying to find the best 32-port switch to replace it for under $400. Don't need anything f...
