Since when did "apps" and "software" diverge? I know this is a very off topic tangent, but I wanted to comment. I think there's always been a difference between "software" and "app" or "application". Application always being a subset of software. An...

I wanted to make it at least through the barbecue, but you know what, **** this. These people refuse to cancel the recurring Stripe payments and they refuse to put the applet back on the site. It's been four weeks, and Renee has been extremely salty whenever it comes up, like it doesn't matter to t...

I'm trying, honestly, I am It just really wasn't that bad. Different than TR of old, yes, but still a lot better than 'clickbait'. And honestly, if it takes that writing style to drive more traffic to the site and get their revenue up then I'm all for it. That's how I'm accepting these changes anyw...

Wait, the RSS is broken? Damn. That's how I find out about new stories most of the time. I believe it is. The last article in my feed is the CPU review, not the redesign announcement. It doesn't show as unreachable or inactive, so I'm thinking just broken. Works for me at https://techreport.com/fee...

Here's the thing everyone: I'm no Lovecraft expert, but I think the analogy to draw is that we're dealing creatures that are barely aware of our existence. Fortunately, they're actually human, and they can be reasoned with, but we're starting from scratch and an abundance of patience will be requir...

Re: Which non-consumer-grade router (no wifi needed)?

I'd like to mention Sophos UTM in this thread too. They have decent little appliances you can buy, or you can run a free version on your own hardware, like pfSense. The only limit on their free version, only 50 IP's can route through it. It has a lot of cool features and definitely overkill for home...

Re: Which non-consumer-grade router (no wifi needed)?

Since the router is your default gateway for everything, even your internal traffic will be processed through it. If by processed you mean switched/forwarded from one port to another, then maybe. But no, local traffic does not get handled by the routing function of your router. And the routing pack...

Re: Pentium D D1517

I personally would never spend that kind of money on a RAID card for a home NAS though. The major NAS OS's (like FreeNAS) discourage use of hardware RAID as it is. It's an unnecessarily added expense, and it creates an additional point of failure, and can very much complicate hardware fault recovery...

Re: Pentium D D1517

My rule of thumb (which I fully admit is an over-generalization, but which should get you into the general ballpark for most workloads) is: 1 Hyperthreaded core (2 threads) = 1.25 "real" cores; 1 Bulldozer/Piledriver module (2 integer cores, 2 threads, but 1 decoder/FPU) = 1.5 "real&...

Re: Pentium D D1517

Yeah, ARK even says the 10Gb network interfaces are there still too. However, I only just noticed it's tray price ($194) is only $5 cheaper than the Xeon D 1521 which is matched as one of the two cheapest Xeon D's at $199. I was hoping for a bit steeper of a discount but I see why it's priced that w...

Pentium D D1517

Has anybody seen anything posted about products containing the Pentium D D1517?? Seems like it's going to be a killer home server CPU, looking like it's basically a lower binned/clocked Xeon D.

Just wanted to come chime in, seems logins are persisting pretty well for me now. It's probably been about a week that I've noticed not having to login all the time.

Good work!

Re: Short password timeout in Comments

Gotcha. Given the site's past behavior for the login, I'd given up on the Remember Me checkbox and just had Chrome caching my login/password so I could just click the login button. But I went ahead and checked it on my last log in to see if there's any difference. I'll keep an eye on it now, let me ...

Re: Short password timeout in Comments

Just so I've got correct expectations, how long should it stay logged in for? Just to give you an idea of my usage pattern, I pretty much keep Chrome open for days. It only closes when I reboot my PC. On articles where I want to watch the comment threads, their tabs tend to stay open for days as wel...

Re: Short password timeout in Comments

This has been an issue for me forever. I mainly use Chrome, but since it does it on every computer I thought that was the way TR worked. If I should be able to be logged in indefinitely let me know how I can fix that!
