Re: Win 10 File explorer not reacting/updating - "Working on it..."

Can you refer to them by UNC name instead of IP? This would be vastly superior and should be standard practice. Following some router fiddling last night, the static IP setting seems to have worked. So my mapped networked drives are linked and available. But!! Now that those mapped links appear to ...

[quote="driller"]You're welcome.

Did you try setting a static ip on the WD drive?

Hmmm. I didn't know about this setting. I'll try it out and attempt a router reset this evening and see how it goes.
thanks!!

Re: Win 10 File explorer not reacting/updating - "Working on it..."

Do you have a drive mapped drive to something that is no longer online?? OK. This was so simple that I didn't consider it... I deleted the pinned/mapped link to a networked drive, and now there doesn't seem to be any problem! Solved! You guys are fast! But that leads to another issue. Every time I ...

Win 10 File explorer not reacting/updating - "Working on it..."

Hi fellow gerbils! I've had an ongoing problem with my Win 10 desktop. I can't say for sure when this issue started, although I feel that it happened around the time of the last big patch. When I click on file explorer, the computer slows right down (for other apps running) and the explorer window j...

Re: 14" Laptop purchasing dilemma

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did look through available refurbished business machines but they were all much older CPUs etc. Also the prices weren't amazing. Too bad I don't have any American relatives - just for the shipping convenience! I've decided to go with the Ideapad 500S - on sale for $...

Also, thanks DPete27. I should have mentioned that the M2 drive was socketed, not soldered into place. It was replaceable/upgradeable. Thanks for pointing out it was an M2 drive.

that sagerbook looks pretty good, but with shipping to Canada it's $920 US, which is about $1200 CDN. Too rich for my blood. Thanks though.

That flex looks interesting. Not sure how I missed it on the best buy website. Too bad it is out of stock. I'll see if I can find it available anywhere else.

Re: 14" Laptop purchasing dilemma

Yes it did. But I was hoping to re-use my existing SSD. Actually, I just found  this  Lenovo 14" (Ideapad 500S) on sale for $800 which has a 1TB mechanical HDD and hi-res screen. No reviews though. Any thoughts on quality of this machine? It seems to have all my specs except for the 360 hinge, ...

14" Laptop purchasing dilemma

Hey guys, I've run into a real purchasing dilemma. One I didn't expect. I've been holding off on upgrading my laptop for a couple years with the expectation of purchasing a new, high resolution 14" laptop that I could upgrade with the 1TB SSD I bought 18 months ago. I had purchased this SSD for...

Re: Best 2.1 system for computer setup

I've been twisting my knob back and forth quite a lot now ;-)

All the static sounds are gone when I change the volume and it's like new!! Thanks again Captain Ned. I can't believe I have been putting up with the 'deteriorating' condition of my speakers for years...

Re: Best 2.1 system for computer setup

The rear speakers came with the most pathetic plastic tripods I'd ever encountered but I remember playing half-life in surround sound with EAX on those things and I was blown away. I completely agree about those goofy tripods (never used), and half-life in surround was part of the reason I bought t...

Re: Best 2.1 system for computer setup

Stole this picture from the internets. this is what I have, but have no need for the extra satellites. They sound great and are so tiny! I love how little space they take up. You can see the troublesome volume knob (that has now been fixed! Thanks again Captain!!) is also there in the picture. http:...

Re: Best 2.1 system for computer setup

Thanks Captain Ned!!

I can still hear a little bit of static when I adjust volume, but it is much MUCH better than it was. And no loss of either channel in the process. Thanks for the great tip!!

Best 2.1 system for computer setup

Hey Sound Experts I'm looking for a new speaker setup for the computer. I have some great Cambridge Soundworks speakers from 15(?) years ago that have done really well over the years. But the volume knob makes the sound cut out (one channel or the other) unless I turn it 'just so', and it also creat...

Re: Please Help! Cloaning OS drive

OK. Just to tie off this thread. This morning I was finally able to clone my Win8 750GB HDD onto my new M550 1TB SSD. What I ended up doing was deleting (after appropriate backups) my data partition and the Asus recovery partition, dropping the number of partitions down to 5. I rebooted a couple tim...

Re: Please Help! Cloaning OS drive

Well, after a lot of hassle trying to figure out how to boot to BIOS in a Win8 notebook (there's no Del or F10 key options), and then figuring out you have to turn off secure boot control (in bios) to enable the ability to boot from the DVD drive, the Clonezilla disk wouldn't boot beyond the initial...

Re: Please Help! Cloaning OS drive

Thanks JBI. I do seem to remember an option to clone sector by sector. I didn't select it because it is slower. Do you know if it will work with different sized drives? I assume it will just leave the extra space available once the cloning is complete?

I'll try that later tonight.

Re: Please Help! Cloaning OS drive

I just tried cloning just the 3 individual partitions that I believe are necessary for Win8 to operate. No luck. Maybe I also need the Asus recovery partition? The computer just boots directly into an error mode that tells you to attempt recovery (which I wouldn't be able to anyway, even if the reco...

Re: Please Help! Cloaning OS drive

Thanks. I'll look into newer cloning software, but I've downloaded the latest from Macrium and AOMEI. Find links to images of disk details. The drive I'm trying to clone is the last one (disk 3 or 4, depending on the screen). You can see that the details in the windows disk management screen (first ...

Re: Please Help! Cloaning OS drive

Hey experts. I'm going to tag onto this thread... This week I received two crucial m550 1TB SSD drives. One for my Win7 desktop, and one for my Win8 laptop. I used Aomei Backupper to clone the desktop drive. It was very painless and no problem. It appears to be working perfectly! Nice program. But n...

Re: New AM3+ motherboard and maybe RAM too

Looked at the Asus boards in more detail. The ASUS M5A97 R2.0 looks especially good for its price and has lots of options. But it doesn't have the extra power for the front USB port charging. Assuming it works properly, the Gigabyte board I'm looking at will still supply charging power when the comp...

Re: New AM3+ motherboard and maybe RAM too

I haven't had the greatest luck with ASUS myself, although I recently bought an ASUS laptop and its seems pretty good. I've had both Gigabyte and MSI motherboards that have lasted for ages with no problems. I think I'm still leaning to getting a whole new AM3+ motherboard, and then upgrading the 109...

Re: New AM3+ motherboard and maybe RAM too

Thanks for the quick link. I didn't realize that those expansion cards had internal headers. However, it doesn't look like they have the greatest reviews.

Anyone have any experience with these USB3 expansion cards? It would save me $80... but not have the extra charging power for USB devices.

New AM3+ motherboard and maybe RAM too

Hi Experts, I have a little dilemma. I bought a new case for better cooling/airflow and also for it's USB3 ports on the front (Fractal Design Define R4 ATX Tower Case) when it was on sale a couple weeks ago. But I was about to start switching over all my components, and I realized that my 'old' AM3 ...

Re: Liquid Cooling options for my PC

I've quickly looked into the ARCTIC Accelero Xtreme III, and it looks like it only fits up to a Radeon 7850 or 7870. No 7900's. Not sure if the list just hasn't been updated with newer cards or what. I've requested the info from their support email system... we'll see how long it takes to get a resp...

Re: Liquid Cooling options for my PC

Thanks guys. Although I didn't write it in my original post, I was wondering about the noise of the pumps and fans. My loudest fan is definitely the 7970 when it ramps up under load. The Hyper 212 (I have that on my cpu already) is actually pretty quiet. I just thought if I went liquid for the gpu, ...
