Re: Something's different...

For me, sticking around is like watching the embers of a once glorious campfire slowly wither away. It is kind of sad, but inevitable. The natural order of things when you get tired of feeding the fire yourself and just want to go to bed.

Re: Goodbye TR, it was a great run

I perhaps have gotten old, but the old 80's comedies always had to have some sort of booby shot or something that as a parent makes you pretty darned uncomfortable watching with a 13yo. You realize that the scenes could have easily been left out or pasteurized without deterring from the movie whatso...

Well, at least this hung on far longer than my original gaming tech site "Stomped", which was abandoned in favor of hosting LAN parties if I remember correctly. That is when I came here, and that is a long time ago. To be honest, TR hasn't influenced a tech purchase for me for years. Most ...

Great, it is if the front page were intentionally sabotaged for standard monitors. It has gone from somewhat annoying but usable to annoying and unusable. Completely replacing an enlarging a garden pond on a shoestring budget. Means a lot of sweat equity.

Unless his water is extraordinarily clean, any residue in the filter housing after a soak in diluted bleach will be neutralized very quickly. If if there is any left, it wont make it past your tongue. There will be more chlorine and byproducts in a swimming pool, and that tends to not kill people. I...

I simply need to stop eating two bowls Cinnamon Squares and Honey Nut Cheerios in the morning every day. The sugar content of both is rather high. At least I get plenty of activity to burn it off most days.

Re: Improving peltier fridge efficiency??

The problem is that when current stops flowing, they do not make good insulators. Thermal energy will immediately start flowing the wrong way. You have to maintain the current required to keep the efficiency high. Mechanically, you could produce an insulating "shutter" that closes when the...

Re: Do new phones have significantly better radios?

In general, smart phone radio reception has terrible antenna patterns as they typically use ceramic chip antennas to condense their size. In addition, they are usually compromised by the case, a hand, and a display. This means that orientation of you phone in your hand matters with reception. Frankl...

4. Do all these different kinds of bulbs emit different amounts of UV? I don't believe any of them do, but relatively short-wave blues in order to activate the phosphors. In the case of RGB bulbs, I don't believe there is any phosphor as white is accomplished via mixing, but they choose a short blu...

That's very interesting. I guess I'm out-of-date with whatever research is latest. But I was under the assumption that flow-batteries were only going to be cost-effective vs Lithium-Ion when the storage-tank for the electrolyte was large enough. So I assumed that Flow-batteries were going to be the...

You may be surprised how fast things are beginning to move for flow batteries. Part of the solution to make it possible and efficient was the creation of SiC power transistors. Nobody said that water energy storage had to be fresh water. Not that you would pump salt water into a freshwater system, but if practically close to an ocean or inlet a reservoir could be built to use seawater as the energy storage mechanism. Lots of coast and nearby higher elevations in Southern C...

A recent push by power chip vendors (Like Analog Devices) suggests that Data-centers would prefer one large 48V redundant, shared, and backed-up bus where all other local supplies derive their power. Seems kind of strange as the amount of current said bus bar would need to carry would be rather larg...

Another moment of tech weakness

My older micro-4/3 camera, the Panasonic GH-2 was getting long in the tooth, so I felt the need to upgrade to the Panasonic G9, being that I am more of a stills guy. All I wanted is more DR and better low light capabilities. What I got was *wow!*. Some of the cool things this camera can do like 60FP...
