Re: Retro Build

I have an old Alienware case I should do something with. I think it is based iff of the classic Antec... What was that model? The one everyone rebadged? It is one of those.

Re: For movies on disc (yeah), do you ever register your "digital copy?"

I have to circle back here. Movies Anywhere is pretty awesome amd worth it. My 4k copy of Avengers Infinity War showed right up in my Amazon movies. Love it.

Re: For movies on disc (yeah), do you ever register your "digital copy?"

It is absolutely worth it to set up your Movies Anywhere account and redeem digital copies. Especially if you have Amazon and iTunes. Once linked, you only have to redeem once and the movies will appear in both libraries. I still like physical media, but there is a space/convenience factor of havin...

Re: For movies on disc (yeah), do you ever register your "digital copy?"

I never mess with the digital copies. If they were through Amazon, I would do it. I do, however, make my own copies for my Plex server. My rationale is that I can handle having two places where I have digital copies. One local, one remote. If I were to go down the digital copy redemption thing, I wo...

Re: What shows are you recently watching?

My wife and I just started watching "Good Omens" after this review and have found it pretty entertaining. It has been our break in the middle of rewatching "Stargate: SG1". Good Omens was really good. The OA Season 2 was awesome. Nothing I hoped would happen in it, even remotely...

Oooooh. I have actually read all of that, but that is the first time it made sense. I have been trying to figure out how to make a Plex user. But it should be done. Got it. Will work more later.

Ended up reformatting. Fresh install of Linux. GPU is working as it should. whew.

Okay, then. Now, I am having trouble setting up Plex Media Server. It is the permissions thingy even though the drive is mounted.

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

A couple of things: I am most definitely on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. And yes, I chose Ubuntu so I could use the DVR (and OTA) functions of the TV card. I am just home from work and will be catching up with the responses as I can, as well as running some of the many commands I need to run. Also, there is so...

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

Linux is frustrating. Okay, current issues: 1. Installed nvidia drivers. Cannot get any resolution over 1024x768. Also, control panel thingy (Nvidia X?) is blank. Tried an older driver, no change. 2. Folders aren't being shared. Installed Samba. Set it up, but it isn't visible on my network. Could b...

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

I was reminded about the FAT restriction for file size when I was copying some TV shows over. The DVR function of Plex creates huge files. 6 GB for an hour show. So, I moved everything back, reformatted the drive into ext4 and am in the process of copying over the files now. 2 hours to go. Samba. Is...

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

I have started the migration. My current plan is this: Drive C: is reformatted with Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS. This is my SSD drive. So far, so good. Drive D: has had all the data copied from it to a USB HD that was formatted with exFAT. D: has now been reformatted in FAT as I want my Windows machine to ha...

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

The Nvidia GPU has to stay for transcoding video. I am moving my BluRay movies to h.265 and not everything can decode that. I was able to confirm that nevnc works under plex on Linux, so it is necessary.

Re: i7 4790k to i5 9600k?

The 4790k only is a bad choice for a server if you aren't transcoding video through plex, as I am. The 950GTX does it now, but it draws a ton more power. And with it being headless, the on-board h.265 decoding is irrelevant. It is transcoding power I need, but with lower power draw. For all the time...

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

Do I want Ubuntu Desktop or Server? I suspect server as I want to run it headless, but I have no idea the options in desktop. If desktop will give me read/write access to folders as well as let me log in remotely, do I really need Server?

New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

So, I need some advice on making the switch. After fighting shared folders over the network from Windows 7 to 10, I am giving up. I believe I will go to a linux distro and just no longer fight the fight. So, here are my basic specs: Intel i3-2120t 4 GB ram Nvidia gtx950 SSD for boot drive 4 TB drive...

In the last day or so, I have seen two articles come across my facebook feed, but have not seen them on the TR front page. Having grown up around very large hydroelectric dams and working on the rivers for the first 20 or so years of my working life, there are quite a few things that are being missed here. You need a river system with surplus water, like the Columbia/Snake River system. The Colorado is all done up and n...

Re: i7 4790k to i5 9600k?

As much as I want Ryzen to be a good option, it just isn't for the framerates I want to achieve. 4790k -> Ryzen over 4790k -> 9600k makes even less sense to me as my goal is one core with very, very high clock speeds. The last 20 fps I need are definitely going to be the hardest, even at 1920x1080. ...

Re: i7 4790k to i5 9600k?

A couple of things: I am using 1866mhz DDR3 CL10. PUBG has a weird thing going on because it is on the Unreal 4 engine: FPS dictates both the rate of fire as well as the recoil of weapons. So, I went to a Gsync monitor, lowered my settings, and am now sitting between 120 and 150 fps. It makes a worl...

I have been thinking of upgrading my system. I already run a nvme ssd and a GTX1060 6GB. But the cpu is getting long in the tooth. That being said, I don't feel the need for a huge cpu. But would a move to am i5 9600k be worthwhile? Losing the 2 threads might be an issue, but I would trade 4 hyper t...

Windows 7 and 10 - sharing folders

I am having some trouble with rebuilding my HTPC's file server configuration. It is pretty straightforward in that I let Plex do everything. Plex is mostly great at everything, it just does a terrible job at allowing files to be uploaded to the remote folders. I typically just use Windows sharing an...
