Re: RIP Anthony Bourdain

As an additional consideration, given Bourdain's long-term struggles with addiction (heroin, IIRC), depression, and his very frank discussions on mental health, and the isolation the lifestyle he lived brought, it does fit into a pattern of suicidal thoughts. True. But suicidal thought patterns (de...

Re: RIP Anthony Bourdain

An impulsive act does not preclude planning. Planning is only an indicator of the stregth of desire to die. When one is looking to attempt to commit suicide, often enough effective methods are looked at. In France, with no access to a firearm or even very tall buildings, hanging is the most effectiv...

Re: RIP Anthony Bourdain

People often enough choose hanging because it ensures that there second thoughts don't matter. Same as a firearm. They take a moment of commitment. Same goes for jumping off a high building or a cliff. Other methods such as wrist slashing often allow for a way back. Staunch the flow of blood, and g...

Re: RIP Anthony Bourdain

I don't understand for which reason he would be assassinated. I wouldn't limit it to assasination. It could be "garden variety" murder or murder-for-hire. Or of course it could just be suicide. I just think that it appears less probable to be suicide with the meager facts given. (..the &q...

Re: Oak Ridge flops 200 Quadrillion times a second

Was wondering why Oak Ridge gets the big iron. Then I realized; less radiation induced errors that close to sea level. Actually Oak Ridge was the cite of Uranium enrichment and nuclear weapons manufacturing back in the day, although I know that the manufacturing process isn't supposed to release mu...

Re: RIP Anthony Bourdain

In the the same week the CDC also published about US suicide rates are up 30% since 1999. I think its an existential crisis thing, and more and more people for one reason or another are sadly running into it. I'd bet a non-trivial percentage of them are members of the armed forces who served in the...

Edgar Martinez. A top 5 greatest right handed hitters ever. Just wow. What he could do with pitches was bizarre. Griffey's swing was amazing, but oh those injuries.

I would only ever consider 10 bit if you were doing professional photo work of some sort, and color accuracy was imperative. There just isn't a need for 1 billion colors over 16 million.

Re: AV1 Video Codec

What lead? Among who? It really only matters which corporations support which codec. More than likely, as h.265 support is already pretty well saturated, we will see AV1 added for HW decoding. And content providers will use whatever they use. Home users will still choose what they want.

Re: Apple Dumps Intel: CONFIRMED!

For the first time ever, I suspect whm is on the right track. I doubt we see a single chip solution from Apple in a MBP. A 4, 8, or 16 chip ARM board, perhaps? It would make a lot of sense, as for most tasks on battery, it could just shutdown individual cpu's. With the Unix roots of OSX, high parall...

Re: Post Your Old Games!

There are so many I had that I really enjoyed, but I fear my folks tossed out. Here are some I remember fondly: Sid Meier's Covert Action (a pretty interesting spy game) Castles (Interplay - it was essentially a castle building RTS against the computer) Earl Weaver's Baseball - really a stastically ...

Can you give some examples of "logic gaming" as well as what your budget is?

My suspicion is that an upgrade in hardware won't make a ton of difference, but you never know.
