Re: BSOD w/new mobo/proc/RAM

So after updating my SSD firmware to the latest version, I went quite a while w/o a BSOD. I was still getting the occasional horizontal lines on my screen (too quick for me to try taking a screenshot of it), and I still got some stuttering when connecting to a Ventrilo server. However, the "dev...

Re: $200 enough for GPU upgrade?

Sorry I forgot to post his monitor size. It's 22". He played the D3 beta and didn't mention any issues, but I know that Star Wars: TOR doesn't run very smoothly for him at max settings. I had a 4870, and that game was precisely why I decided to upgrade. My father and I both shoot for our games ...

$200 enough for GPU upgrade?

My father wants to upgrade his 4850 and asked me if $200 would be enough. I've recently upgraded to a 7850 and have been mostly happy with it*, so I'm inclined to think that he should pony up an extra $60 or so to get that. However, what do y'all think about the ~$200 cards available right now? Woul...

Re: BSOD w/new mobo/proc/RAM

Can you please take a screen shot of the information inside those Kernel-Power errors. Do you have another power supply to test your system with? To start ruling things out, remove parts you really don't need to at least run it and test. Start with the video card (if you've got on-board or a spare ...

Re: BSOD w/new mobo/proc/RAM

I had no idea this Event Viewer thing existed, nor do I really know how to read it. But here's a screenshot of the log for errors labeled "critical." And below I'm pasting the text from the "details" tab. Does this mean anything useful to you? Yeah, that just tells us the system...

Re: BSOD w/new mobo/proc/RAM

I downloaded Real Temp and then spent several minutes running around in Star Wars: The Old Republic with the following programs running in the background: Internet Explorer, Ventrilo, Steam, Windows Media Center, and Catalyst Control Center. I'd normally never play a game with that many programs usu...

Re: BSOD w/new mobo/proc/RAM

When you get BSODs what error is being reported? You might try running Event Viewer and looking in the System log to see if anything jumps out at you. At the very least you should see what hardware is disappearing and reappearing to generate "he little noises it makes when a USB device is unpl...

Re: BSOD w/new mobo/proc/RAM

Really sounds like a hardware (or firmware) issue of some sort, which could be difficult to narrow down unless you've got other components you can swap in. For starters, are you running the latest BIOS for that motherboard, and does that SSD have the latest firmware on it? Yes, I'm on the latest BI...

BSOD w/new mobo/proc/RAM

I recently installed a new mobo, processor, and RAM (which are linked in my build below), and I've been periodically getting a BSOD as well as a couple random other issues (some horizontal lines that appear on the screen for a second, then disappear; freezing up for a few seconds, audio stuttering, ...

Re: HDMI Audio won't work w/new 7850

You're right. You don't have to use separate or third party drivers for the audio any more. That's been bundled in. But I dont know if that exists in the drivers only package or not. My suggestion? Download the whole latest catalyst control center suite. Uninstall everything driver related for the ...

HDMI Audio won't work w/new 7850

Just today I swapped out my 4870 for a new 7850, and now the HDMI audio isn't working. The video works fine, but the computer seems to think the HDMI audio output isn't plugged in. I remember that back in the day I had to download a separate little driver for HDMI audio, but everything I've read see...

Re: Error message w/new 7850

i get that with my 6950's. but only if i install the encoder/decoders. i just install the driver with the ccc. Wirerogue FTW! That fixed it, thanks! I played a bit of Star Wars The Old Republic, and even though the game does run much more smoothly, I've noticed a bit of "lag" here and the...

Just tried that (although I installed a few decoders and such in addition to the driver; I just left off CCC). I'm still getting the message.

Error message w/new 7850

So I just installed my new 7850 today, along with the driver and CCC from AMD's website . Every time I boot, I get an error message that reads: kdbsync.exe - System Error The program can't start because OpenCL.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. I tri...

So I'm just trying to find out how flexible you are with the $650 total budget and trying to think it through. Ah, I got ya. I can't really afford to be too flexible. If it's going to make a huge difference, I could probably go up by about $50, but that's it. When I checked this morning, Newegg did...

How can I know until it's out? I imagine I'll probably end up with SB due to my budget, but I might as well wait until IB comes out and see what prices look like for both SB and IB at that point.

Is a 7850 a reasonable choice for me?

I've been itching to upgrade for a while now, but I was advised the last time I asked about upgrading to wait for the new processors from Intel and the 7xxx cards from AMD. Well, after reading the review of the 7850, I'm really liking the idea of grabbing one of those (as soon as I can find one in s...

Sorry to necro an old thread, but I'd like to know what everyone thinks is the best antivirus bang for buck right now. My dad just got an invite to the beta, and I'm gonna try to convince him to share his login info with me. I know he won't have read the terms very closely and won't want to. Does anyone happen to know what the policy is on "testing on more than one computer"? The SW:TOR beta allowed it. I ...

More second-hand info from my dad's internal Blizzard tester friend (to be taken with a grain of salt, for sure): he says the game itself is ready, but there are two competing marketing philosophies within Blizzard. One wants to do a huge marketing blitz and release the game just a couple of weeks a...

Problem solved. My idiot father was putting in the wrong account name the whole time, and for reasons that are beyond me, Steam wasn't saying that the account name was wrong. You should try using the DMZ portion of this router if it is available. Alternatively you ca...

Re: Help w/opening ports for Steam

No one I know has ever had to set and port forwarding on their router to get Steam to work. To me, it sounds more like a firewall issue then one of port forwarding. Try disabling any firewalls that you have (router and local PC firewalls), and see if Steam connects with them turned off. If so, then...
