Re: Who is still using PCI slots these days?

I think this is a very good/fair question. It's a lot like the PS/2 debate. I'll pose a couple more questions: - How many folks have so many PCI-e expansion cards that they would be better served with more PCI-e slots? - What is the cost of adding a PCI slot or two? I think we've seen that there are...

Re: First Build

750W is gross overkill (unless you're planning on adding another GPU in an SLI setup). You could drop down to something in the 500W range and save $40 or so.

BenQ BL2411PT (can't find in U.S.)

Does anyone know if you can buy BenQ displays in the U.S.?

OK, how many of you got the joke?

I don't get it. If he's freezing, serotonin helps regulate body temperature. So maybe 5-HTP would be useful.

Re: Initial Driver Installer - Listen up Motherboard Makers

I'd rather the mobo manufacturer knock $.40 off the price and keep their crappy CD because I'm either going to use Linux or have the drivers downloaded/ready on a USB stick :) CD's are usually a waste and should be an option to order off the mobo vendor's site. Even if the mobo company keeps the pri...

Re: Some performance troubles with Debian 6.0.4

Catalyst is known for poor 2D performance, even when it's installed and operating properly. Unless you're trying to play intense games, stick with the open-source drivers (though you'll need a lot of backported stuff (kernel/drm/mesa) for it to work in Debian 6 ).

What's even more funny is that he's using suse (which probably means KDE4) after his huge rant about how terrible KDE4 was when it first came out, and how he was switching to Gnome.

Re: Finally... a Foobar2000 replacement for Linux users?

After using fb2k through wine for a long time, I settled on Audacious. The 2.5.x version finally gave me enough features to sort my music properly.

Also, do you use the ALSA output of Audacious or the Pulse one? It usually defaults to ALSA, and I would recommend changing to Pulse.

Re: AMD AM3 core temps question

It really sounds like a BIOS/Q-fan issue to me if the fan is running at high RPM at low temp. I would suggest updating BIOS. If that doesn't help disable fan control and use Speedfan.

Re: Who else uses Amarok?

Amarok2 uses Phonon, which is a thin wrapper to other sound API's. You can try both the xine and gstreamer backends to see what suits you better (if you have the appropriate packages installed). You can configure Phonon with:

Re: AM2 motherboard and GPU suggestion desired

I've come to prefer Biostar Tforce boards for AMD builds, because of their reasonable price and their attention to detail in the BIOS. MSI has let me down a few times with the physical quality of their boards.

Looking at your sig, I think the best course right now would be to get a 6800 or 7800 GS and possibly another HD if you need more space.
