I can't recall the exact dimensions, but yes, it's relatively small. It's 14' x 20', maybe.

I know this is going to sound strange, but I am the only tech/IT guy you will ever meet that does not own a cell phone, smart or dumb. And until the bank makes it a condition of employment, I refuse, lol.

Re: Portable mp3 player/speaker system

Agreed, I could just get a set of speakers and run the 3.5mm out from the Zenbook to the speakers. I was considering an "all in one" type device for the convenience of having mp3s on a USB drive or MicroSD card and not requiring the Zenbook. Honestly, I'm not trying to be difficult. I've j...

Re: Portable mp3 player/speaker system

I'm not averse to using the Zenbook as the output, as I have a ton of my favorite mp3s on that laptop. However, with that said, a "standalone" type speaker system with either/or/both USB drive input/micro SD input would be fabulous.

Portable mp3 player/speaker system

Gerbils, I need your audio input! Here's the scenario: we have a family cabin (off grid) on my paternal grandmother's 75 acre cattle farm. This cabin has a solar panel, so as long as it's getting decent sun, one can run wired electronics from the wall outlets. I often take my 13" Asus Zenbook a...

I'll throw in a vote for the Sony MDR-7506. "Flat" response, but you'll hear stuff the way it's meant to be. Best set of cans I've ever owned, hands down.

Re: Cutting my soda habit in half.

I gave up sweetened, carbonated/non-carbonated beverages about a decade ago.  It was difficult, at first, to break the psychological habit.  But, once you, taking even a sip of a soda/soft-drink/pop/"Coke"/wtfever you call it is like drinking syrup.  It's just...sickly sweet.  All I drink ...

Re: UHD playback on PCs DOA?

I just want to reiterate (and maybe help bring it back on topic?): the requirements to play UHD BD discs on a PC is very exacting, and I don't see sales (at least initial sales) of the hardware/software components necessary being strong at all.  Now, if after time, I (and/or other users), happen to...

Re: UHD playback on PCs DOA?

We'll see. It sounds like they've taken some pretty extreme measures to protect the decryption code this time around. Pagey (a couple of posts back) has also indicated that the "usual suspects" aren't planning to attempt a crack of AACS 2.0, so if it does happen it'll probably be a while....

Re: UHD playback on PCs DOA?

I can't believe that in this audience no one sees the announcement of UHD Blu-ray drives and the necessary software for playback as the boon that they are for users of home media servers.  I've got 1000+ Blu-rays ripped to my home server, currently occupying some 30TB of drive space.  I can't rip U...

Re: UHD playback on PCs DOA?

Everything about the whole thing is a mess.  I don't have any UHD BluRays yet, but I fully intend on ripping them (if possible) so I don't have to deal with the stupid DRM ****.  If I can't, they'll get returned. I got a BluRay for Christmas (Star Trek: Beyond) and I was amazed to find out that pla...

Re: GeForce 210 introduces audio lag (USB)

From memory, the amount of available RAM showing was not affected by adding the video card...but, I will verify this tonight. The Device Manager thing was about showing the chunks of RAM (by hex address ranges) that are used by devices, and where they are. (If it still works in Windows 10) it can s...

Re: GeForce 210 introduces audio lag (USB)

I wouldn't be surprised if the GeForce is pushing the available RAM too low, given 2 GiB is the minimum spec for 64 b Windows since 7. Have you looked at which ranges are used by what, particularly the GeForce, when it's installed?  And/or compared that to without the GPU ?  (Device Manager->View->...

Re: GeForce 210 introduces audio lag (USB)

Does installing the 210 cause an HDMI audio driver to get installed? If so, maybe that's messing with the audio stack in a way that is causing the lag. I tried it both ways, JBI.  Both with and w/out the Nvidia HD Audio driver...still has the lag/pops, even w/out the HDMI/HD audio driver installed ...

Re: GeForce 210 introduces audio lag (USB)

I believe, but will have to verify, that the card is a 1GB card.  I had not considered the addressable RAM issue.  I will try to find an updated BIOS. I do know that the board itself (I'd have to find the URL for the OEM info on it) is locked to support 2 GB in total only, no matter what size DIMMs...

Re: GeForce 210 introduces audio lag (USB)

If you've got a 32-bit limitation (caused by a setting in the BIOS), the RAM on the videocard may be eating into the total amount of RAM addressable by the system, thus lowering your usable amount of system RAM and further hurting performance.  This doesn't usually happen until you're at or above 3...

GeForce 210 introduces audio lag (USB)

Okay, gerbils, short story made long, so bear with me.  Years ago I began mixing 12" vinyl LPs on a pair of direct-drive Numark turntables.  After a few years, the company I was sourcing all my vinyl from folded, so I sold all my gear and began re-collecting most of my vinyl in mp3 from from Be...

Re: Apollo Lake mATX motherboard launched

I'm pretty sure a bank doesn't use $50 motherboards in teller machines. They usually use higher quality industrial boards. You don't do bank IT exams.  In the banking world IT is seen mostly as a unrecoverable cost.  Cheaping out on purchase and never upgrading until forced to is the entire IT capi...

I will pick up a RX 460 when they are released to replace my aging HD 6450, probably. I haven't gamed in years, but if I do it will be something like Torchlight 2 or Diablo 3. The rest of my GPU needs are limited to media such as DVD and Blu-ray. I'll be driving a single 23" 1920x1080 display, ...

Re: Flaky optical drive causes system hangs... WTF?

I had an LG BD-ROM in a Core 2 Duo machine, and it would cause the machine to hard lock at the HP BIOS boot screen on nearly every power on. It often took 2 or 3 hard resets to get the PC to boot and load Windows. The drive finally failed during a firmware update, and after replacing it with a DVD b...
