Indeed. I didn't follow Ars "back in the day," but it's my go-to site now, just because of the breadth (and depth) of the coverage they offer. You want IT security news, you got it. You want a Beth Mole article full of clever puns about brain eating amoeba, you got it. You want some obscu...

Clearly my exorbitant bank salary and your equally exorbitant regulatory examiner salary are just shy of being able to accomplish this feat.

I don't think it's just about specific searches. I know my phone has a google news feed thing that tries to pick up and suggest articles from a wide range of sites that it thinks I would be interested in (google and privacy don't blend). It can often can show articles very much like what's being di...

So at a high level, I can understand, within reason, the search engine optimization "goal" for revenue generating purposes. But for the love of god, having been in banking and IT for nearly 20 years now, I have never done an intentional search for the sort of tripe that is on the front pag...

Rtings has a "consolidation" type article specific to 1440p displays that might assist you: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/ ... uad-hd-qhd

I'm frankly astonished that RTings exists. The only two revenue streams (according to their "about us" page) are donations/subscriptions and affiliate links. No ads, no manufacturer-supplied review units, even their YouTube videos play without pre-roll ads. Without some sort of benevolent...

It's been fun, ladies and gents, but unfortunately 'tis over. I've literally made some (hopefully) lifelong friends here, so I have no regrets about any time spent here, whether in the forums or on the front page. Regardless of what the new ownership does to the site (and it's history and legacy), I...

Also, bang for the buck, it's hard to go wrong with TCL's 6 or 5 series: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/6-series-r617-2018 or https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/5-series-s517-2018 and both have seen some significant discounts online lately (see Dealmaster on Ars Technica, for example). Vizio's new 2019 M series with Quantum Dots is getting good marks: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/vizio/m-series-quantum-2019 Keep in mind there are 2 sub-levels with the 2019 M series: a G8 and a G7 for most sizes. The G8s have high peak brightness for both SDR and HDR, and they feature more dim...

Re: Video Backup - Encode - file types etc.

As already stated, if you have the DVDs and they have been "finalized" (such that a standard/set top DVD player can read them), MakeMKV will mux (multiplex) the video and audio together inside an .mkv file as a single transport stream. DVD Video, the actual standard, uses MPEG-2 for video ...

Re: Using TV's with computers

Another thing I've found since I've transitioned to using TVs as monitors: the "PC Mode" can still have really bad picture quality. Now, with that said, let me elaborate a little further - depending on the manufacturer and model, the "PC Mode" setting can do anything from 1.) sim...

Re: Using TV's with computers

Most modern TVs will now, by default, or via their software configuration allow for proper display (e.g., RGB full range, no overscan, etc.) of an image from a computer's GPU. Some are of course better than others, but a good place to get reviews is rtings.com, which will have a section in each TV's...

20 bucks a disc HUH!? >.> I mean that, on average, I can buy a commercial Blu-ray of nearly any "film" for 20 bucks, and be holding in my hand for that 20 bucks, a copy of equal or greater quality than what would have take 3 or 4 reels of 35mm release print to hold when I was a kid.
