Re: Something's different...

Welp, with new "Web 2.0 Buzz" ownership, TR is effectively a dead shell like most of the other "Tech Journalism" sites, bye.

I think its telling they flipped the switch with no warning on a major launch day that was bound to drive tons of traffic their way.

Re: 16 COARZ.... Not announced by AMD

Intel has some overlap with the Xeon-W parts, but the X-series HEDT parts do very much compete with Threadripper. *unless you want ECC. :) While it is a bit of a pain to get an ECC-capable Threadripper board, it's by no means impossible. You must be confusing AM4. All TR boards I've seen support EC...

Noctua's mounts are solid as a rock.

I'm shipped individual 4U rack units with them inside cross country without problems, many times. Best narrow ILM coolers by a mile, outperform anything and quieter to boot.

Heavy HSF fearmongering is overblown. AIO leaking on the other hand, not so much.

I've pasted and repasted my over half dozen TRs dozens of times now moving them around and swapping coolers ("thanks" Enermax for your defective AIOs) and I'm really not sure why the OP is worried about paste so much. Takes a minute or two to apply or clean up, if anything having a huge IH...

Ironically, most forensics tools I use are very accurate at how long it will be to finish imaging an entire drive.

When you are copying every raw block sequentially there is not much to get in the way other than bad block re-read attempts.

No interest in the ruined editions.

Fortunately for cultural history, the Harmy editions are well-distributed across the globe. Probably the only versions that will matter 100s of years in the future, the irony is deep indeed.

Still waiting for monitors announced last freaking August to actually ship. Like the acer xv273k for example. Maybe then I'll care about CES vaporscreens.

Keep in mind the overpriced 4k "144hz"123456789* gsync turds took two years to release.

LPC, SMB and similar low-level 'SOC' controllers are not going away anytime soon (probably not even in the next decade) so things like PS/2, COM/serial buses and many other "legacy" things are actually on just about every x86 board out there. They take up little or no real estate, have ton...

Good TVs today are far ahead of most monitors in raw quality. Some of the HDR/etc panels out right now rival professional color grading monitors, if only there was a way to talk to them directly and fine tune the calibration. The main problem is they do not have good inputs, nor a way to bypass thei...

You don't have to reboot TR, just use something like process lasso in windows. Previous xeons past a certain number of cores (12+ on 2011v3) have 2 or more rings and can also benefit from this. Better boards will also let you control which "numa mode" they use. Skylake-X went mesh but the ...

If you want real control, real security and advanced functions: roll your own router and split off the wireless to something like unifi, then never look back.

All consumer routers are junk, you can partially bandaid some of them with custom firmware but even then they are still anemic.

With a minor hardware investment you can JTAG or similar recover these cards. LSI stuff is pretty solid on this front. You can also do the same with motherboard bios, no sockets or desoldering required for most modern board designs. I always make a quick raw backup on my new boards. Only if somethin...
