Alternatives to renting a fiber DSL gateway?

The parents switched from Charter cable (100/10Mbps) to TDS DSL (300/300Mbps) about a month ago. The aunt/uncle a few blocks away got 600/400. They owned the cable gateway (modem/router), but will soon begin paying a rental fee for the Actiontec T3200M which I'm told isn't available except through I...

Re: USB to XLR

The first link (Matrix X-spdif) does more than 16-bit and it's also bus-powered. Why did you go for the Fohhn? I'm going with the Matrix Audio X-SPDIF now since you and rephlex pointed out the Fohhn's 16-bit resolution, but the Fohhn was appealing at first glance because it was a simpler design wit...

Re: USB to XLR

Ugh, can we please stop with "Digital XLR"?? It's AES/EBU. It just happens to be carried over a cable terminated in XLR connectors. Thank Bob I got out of the roadie business before all this digital stuff crept in. Everyone please say "AES/EBU digital output terminated in XLR" f...

Re: USB to XLR

The obvious question is... do those PA speakers also have analog XLR inputs and/or balanced TRS inputs? I bet they do. And at that point all you need is an affordable interface with either of those outputs (sub-$200, more close to $100) and you're set. For this specific simple scenario (a single PC...

Re: USB to XLR

I remember looking into this ages ago to run an old high-school PA setup from a laptop for Socials (dances). From memory it was a little Peavey thing that did the trick for us, I think we needed balanced XLRs from memory? Dunno, been years. I've also seen one of these things in action which does wh...

USB to XLR

I'd like to send audio from my PC via USB to digital XLR (AES/EBU) speaker inputs. The Radial USB-Pro ($230) converts to analog XLR, but it's otherwise perfect. Or I could use the Hosa ODL-312 ($110) via S/PDIF, but it needs external power via a wall wart which is annoying. Anyone know of a USB to X...

Re: GIS Desktop

I do a bit of GIS consulting work on the side. ArcGIS isn't particularly multithreaded so i7-7700k is fine or even an i5 or i3. Basically, you want fastest single-thread performance. SSDs good. I run with dual 480GB SSDs - one for general PC stuff and one dedicated for GIS data and working room. In...

Seconded for dBpoweramp. You can batch process your entire music collection with sub-sub-subfolders from any format(s) to a single, lossy, compatible-with-your-device format in about four clicks. Mine is all organized and stored in FLAC so as soon as that new hotness format comes along all you have ...

Samsung Spinpoint M9T 2TB 2.5" 9.5mm HDD

I just picked up a 2TB storage drive (the first model to be 9.5mm) for my Thinkpad's Ultrabay adapter, which requires standard-sized hard drives. Since the bare drive still isn't available, I went with the $129.99 Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2 TB USB 3.0 and removed the external enclosure with a guitar...

I thought all of his novels up to 1998 were quite good and, except for the new ghost-written ones, I wouldn't want to see abridged editions. Laptops and intense graphics don't mix; avoid high power laptops in favor of building a desktop. I'd recommend a well built business laptop instead. Your backpack and transcript will thank you. Micro-ATX and mini-ITX can both support a respectable single-card gaming rig, and are highly portable. May...

My immediate reaction is to check your BIOS for the boot order. USB devices can sometimes interfere with priority. I'm not sure why there would be a delayed manifestation of the symptom though.
