Re: That honeymoon didn't last long

Ok. So here's the biggest issue with the idea that "Apple should take every possible responsibility for any number of my actions." It's highly irresponsible for them as a company to do that. To be clear, I understand that **** happens. But to suggest that Apple should've built a back door ...

Re: Would you recommend a Mac with Lion?

I personally use Lion and a MBP for both my job and my music and couldn't be happier. It does everything I could possibly need it to, and pretty well at that. Those who claim that Mac OS X Lion is not powerful enough for even the most demanding power users are most likely just inexperienced with it ...

Re: Medfield Benchmarks are in: The x86 power myth is finish

However impressive these numbers are, I'd say they're more of a testament to Intel's best-in-the-world manufacture process, than the viability of x86 in low power computing scenarios. At 32nm LP, I don't see how Intel should ever be losing the power consumption fight with any ARM chip at all. If In...

They've been selling tablets running full version of windows since XP and before, and up until 2 years ago had a virtual monopoly on tablets used in industry and medical, now the ipad comes out in 2009 and you think its a new idea? Re: Windows 8 preview

Microsoft continues to prove how off base they are with respect to mobile computing. I'm sure this will be fine for desktops, as you can switch back to the more traditional windows UI. But why on earth did they think it was a good idea to build a tablet UI on top of a desktop version of windows? Tab...

Re: Apple to drop Intel, go with ARM

I doubt it. Firstly, ARM still lacks the raw power to make any headway in the desktop space, and since professional audio/video production applications are a part of Apple's Mac platform (Logic and Final Cut, anyone?), it wouldn't make any sense to re-engineer software just for a downgrade. Secondly...

Dude I was just in Coffeyville, KS on Sunday picking up my brother from school. I didn't see a thing coming up the highway, but it's amazing how weather can change over the course of a few miles, I guess.

My heart goes out to everyone in the area. Anyone know if there's a way to donate?

Can't say I understand the point of starting a mobile website at this point. I'm sure there was a time when mobile phones were incapable of a lot of the speed and compliance that a desktop browser has. But that was years ago. These days, with smartphones and their respective browsers being as powerf...

Re: Are SSDs on their deathbed?

In terms of longevity, one factor that gets overlooked is capacity. We know that as manufacturing process goes down, so does the amount of charge a cell can hold, and therefore, the number of times it can be written to. But as process goes down, density will go up--meaning--we'll have more space to ...

TRIM command on OS X!

Attention to all my SSD-wielding Mac users: Our day has come! Kinda... A guy by the name of Cindori over at macrumors.com has created a tool that supposedly enables TRIM for SSDs under Mac OS X 10.6.7. Apparently, the current Apple AHCI drivers for the new MBPs have TRIM enabled for APPLE SSDs only....

Re: [POLL] SSD Capacity Sweet Spot?

Truth be told, even though I ended up getting an SSD, I don't see a practical sweet spot right now. The inexpensive are relatively better priced, but have very little space, and require many sacrifices and usage model changes to accommodate. The more spacious ones (240GB+) don't require as much in t...

What is said flaw you're talking about? I thought the 510 was a pretty darn good drive, though abit slow in some sequential tests compared to available competition. It is. But from what I read, every review ended with: "It's great... buuuuuut. We'd rather it have better random r/w performance&...

Even with your example of copying large amounts of sequential data, who copies from a SATA 6gbps SSD to another SATA 6gbps SSD? That's still not real world. I've done it many times this year transferring files to friends computers. Although it's not often, it's not out of the question. Da_Boss, peo...

Re: The problem with SSD benchmarking...

I wasn't looking for a justification on my SSD purchase. I don't regret it. I was just perplexed that an SSD that got almost universally panned due to one supposed theoretical flaw ends up doing so well in most practical tests. I understand that a lot of benchmarking is more like benchmarketing, but...

Is there a point where anymore random performance is pointless unless you put the thing in a server, or have an amazing enough reaction time that the SSD is waiting for you? When can you stop looking...

The problem with SSD benchmarking...

Hey Guys, Against the advice of many a tech site, I pulled the trigger and purchased an Intel 510 250GB (as opposed to, say, a Vertex 3) for my new 2011 MacBook Pro 15". I figured, if I'm gonna make the move, I'd better go SATA3, or nothing. At first, I was a little worried, as I'd heard nothin...

Re: Western Digital Buys Hitachi GST

For what? They sell SSDs under their own brand, that was my point. You don't see that happening in mature markets. That's not true. Just look at the RAM industry. The number of brands in the market isn't related to the markets maturity but to the markets structure. The SSD market is already set in ...

Re: Western Digital Buys Hitachi GST

This looks to be an entirely business decision. From what I've seen, Hitachi's business lies mostly in OEM channels; which is somewhere that, for all of WD's awesomeness, they've never really seemed to have a presence. One note: Anyone else ever get worried about the consolidation of tech companies?...

Re: Which 128gb 6Gbs Sata3 SSD?

It looks as if the Vertex 3 will be the consumer SSD to beat in 2011, based on several reviews I've seen. That being said, reliability has always been Intel's territory and It'll be interesting to see if moving to a Marvell controller will make any difference in that regard.

Firstly, Mac or PC? Usually this doesn't matter, but I'm a huge fan of Logic 9. It's a Mac only pro app developed by Apple. If you're looking to get back into audio in any semi serious way, I'd recommend the Express version. Gotta have a Mac, though... Based on your post though, it looks as if you'r...

Re: Any price you would buy an Apple computer

I think it's clear that the people here at TR generally fall into these categories: 1) I see the value in what Apple does/makes, and will gladly pay for it. 2) I acknowledge that there's is merit to their products, but I don't personally benefit from it. So, I wouldn't pay for it. 3) There is nothin...

Re: Any price you would buy an Apple computer

I'm still not sure why, but many have stated that you can get a better computer for cheaper. This is probably true. But nobody's arguing that Macs have the best performance/price ratios. That's not why people buy them. So, we should all probably stop trying to think of the better deals that Dell or...

Re: Any price you would buy an Apple computer

I didn't answer because you don't have an "I think they're priced right" option. The "apple tax" is a lot of FUD that been spread around over the years and used to convince people that don't know better. Yes, I can get a Dell laptop for $200 - $300 cheaper than I can a Mac Book ...

You prefer leaving tabs of all your favorite sites open to just subscribing to their feeds in an RSS Reader? To each their own, I guess.
