Re: Something's different...

I first started coming here around the PII/P3 transition time. I was a lurker for a little and then signed up and posted pretty frequently when I was in college. Posted less often due to time constraints of school after that but still dropped by a few times per day for several years. I remember Dama...

Re: Good preamp?

Thank you guys for the response. Definitely don't consider myself a true audiophile....I really like good sound but don't venture much beyond the point of diminishing returns. Frankly my $150 Sony turntable that I got at Best Buy a couple of years ago sounds pretty good to me so I wouldn't want to s...

Good preamp?

A friend gave me a Kenwood KD 550 turntable (this 30-pound beast from c. 1975 has a synthetic granite deck to reduce vibration among other features). Need a preamp for it -- any suggestions? Does it really matter? Appreciate any suggestions. Will output to Klipsch Reference R28F speakers thru Sony S...

Most of my sports heroes are from baseball: Mark McGuire (true it was the Steroid Era but 1998 was the most exciting year for hitting in baseball, got to see him hit #62 at Busch Stadium on 9/8/98, crazy times!) Tony LaRussa Albert Pujols Yadier Molina Clayton Kershaw (fun to watch him pitch even if...

Re: New futureproof C2Q rig: Please advise!

I had almost exactly the same Q6600 rig and only stopped using it last year when the CPU fan died and I didn't actually use it enough to bother fixing it. Still hummed along up to that point though!

Re: Where do you bank?

I do all of my banking (except for a few old credit cards that I never use anymore) with USAA, which is an awesome online bank. It's available to military members and their families, if you have any way of getting in to it, I'd highly recommend them.

Re: Soundbar vs. speakers

Thank you for the input! I think I'll probably look for some tower speakers if the money would be better spent that way. Good point about the flexibility of adding speakers for more surround effect in the future if I wanted. My main hesitation regarding surround systems with a lot of speakers is pla...

Soundbar vs. speakers

We usually watch TV and movies in a roughly 25'x12' room, across from the TV the short way (12'). With a budget of about $1000-1200, would a good soundbar and woofer be the best, or a more traditional stereo system with 2 big speakers? Not really interested in more than 2 speakers w/woofer max. From...

Re: Treating Readers as Clients or Crowd-Sourcing Research

I think the forums offer a place where all the Gerbils could get together and beg the already-overworked staff to review a specific piece of hardware, and come up with ways to get it done, if we wanted to do it that way. Seems most hardware readers are interested in is already reviewed here, though....

W7 won't run from clone in same computer.....

Is there any way around this? I cloned the old 80GB drive I'd installed W7 on as a temporary measure while my bigger HDD was being replaced on warranty to the newly arrived replacement drive, only to have W7 tell me it wasn't a genuine copy when I tried booting from the new clone. Is there a way I c...

It's not Charter's fault that the burst speed is what the bandwidth test sites like speedtest show... What other legitimate reason could there possibly be for "boosting" the speed of the first 20MB of a download? Helps you get those song-size files and websites in the blink of an eye, too

Packard Bell 486 SX 33MHz w/4MB RAM and a 250MB HDD and......a CD-ROM! I remember playing Return to Zork for hours on that machine. Felt twice as fast when we upgraded the RAM from 4 to 8 MB for $250. Stopped turning on because the rod that ran from the front button to the PSU in the back of the mac...
