Re: How do I create a MEmtest disk?

A little background on CD-ROMs might help. CDs follow a particular format, where certain areas are reserved for boot code, other areas for a table of contents, and the rest for data blocks. When you burn an ordinary data CD-ROM, you give the burner software a list of files, and the software construc...

Re: Creepiest movie ever

My vote is for Repulsion, Roman Polanski's first English language film. Any film that shows you mental illness from the madwoman's point of view is creepy. Great dream sequences.

Re: Any good UPS brands other than APC?

Surge protection is sacrificial in nature; after a limited number of hits, the devices no longer protect. So using a separate inexpensive surge protector and replacing it periodically may make sense. How often? That depends on where you live. The utilities are buried in my city, so surges are rare. ...

Re: X Window through SSH through RDC

I'd step back from the technical problem and look at the bigger picture. Ask your network folks for a direct route. If there is a legitimate policy reason why you can't have a direct route, then working around it could get you fired. If there's no policy reason, but they won't do it anyway, write a ...

Re: Where'd fanless graphics go? (AMD 6xxx+, NV 5xx+)

You may want to broaden your search to include models with quiet fans. A fan that slows or stops under idle may be good enough. When gaming, you might be too busy to notice the fan kicking into high speed. Look for smooth ramp up or down; a fan that oscillates between two speeds is more irritating t...

Re: How do you make your coffee?

You need three things to brew coffee: coffee, water, and something to bring together the coffee and the water under the right conditions. Water is important. I use a cheap Brita filter to remove the chlorine taste from my tap water. Your coffee can't taste better than the water, so use water that yo...

Re: HDTV for monitor

How could your ATI card possibly change the overscan setting on the TV? You may have an overscan setting for the card, and an overscan setting on the TV. They both need to be off when using the TV as a monitor. You need to change the TV settings on the TV. Digital TVs process the image to provide ov...

Re: Best Mail Server application?

For SMTP, I'd add postfix to the list, even though I use and am satisifed with exim. Both are good choices. Qmail has quirks. It also has very vocal fans. If your friend doesn't already have several years of experience with sendmail, then he should pick something less convoluted. I use Courier for I...

Re: Ubuntu 8.04, trouble with filesystem corruption.

My guess is that you have one of two problems: 1. Flaky hardware. Disks can fail with certain combinations of circumstances that may not occur with the diagnostics. Or you could have problems with the controller, CPU, or RAM. If you are overclocking, set it back to standard, and set the memory timin...

Silver conducts electricity better than copper, but gold is worse. The benefit to using gold is that it is much, much more resistant to corrosion.

Copper is being replaced by PEX for plumbing, and by fiber optics for communication. But copper still rules for electrical power applications.
