Re: Gateway laptop hard drive connector

Alas, that is not the way my HDD connects... :( I must have an older version - I would much rather have the type of connector you saw. Instead of snapping onto the mobo as in that picture, the end of the ribbon cable slides into a tiny socket ('somewhat' like a SODIMM socket but smaller), and is hel...

Gateway laptop hard drive connector

I received an old Gateway Solo 200ARC laptop, but the hard drive was 'bad', and the user had tried to perform basic 'surgery' to fix it. Then they sent it to me. I was able to get the data off the hard drive for them with an external enclosure and some data recovery software. Now I'm trying to see i...

Edit: Maybe $50 for for an AGP card is too cheap, but it's crazy to spend above too much >$100 unless you expect to buy a used AGP CPU/mobo/RAM combo sometime in the future. Heck, maybe one will fall on your lap one day for free. You're not going to believe this: One did. I know, it's an old thread...

How does one "lug around" a 24" CRT? My 19" CRT weighs like 40 pounds and its bulk makes it hard to hold/carry. I shudder to think what a 24" monitor would feel like. He comes over... "Hey Mike, gimme a hand out here!" I go out, lug in 24" monitor for him. (d...

Are you sure the PC is locked up/frozen? (i.e., when the bsod happens, do the capslock/scrolllock/numlock lights go on/off when you press the keys?) Could it be video drivers or mobo drivers? Try new/old ones? Highly unlikely, but maybe the drive has a borderline sector and that causes it? Try a com...

AliceC, AGP doesn't provide as much power at the slot as PCI-E, and I have a 1950GT - yep, it has 2 molexes. Mine's running on an old FSP 400watt, so the PSUs should all power it - maybe it got blown because the old PSU couldn't take it. The others survived because they're less demanding of power or...

Re: Distributed backups

This works well in a small office without a server. Backup each machine to two or three other machines. You loose an exponential amount of space but you're better covered and you don't have to buy an external drive. Until fire takes the office out... Buy an external drive, backup to that weekly and...

Do you have an antivirus/antispam/protection program running that 'automagically' renames attachments? Maybe it is getting a different extension assigned by that program and when you save it it gives it the right extension.

Don't recall if batch can do that, but if you search/replace the rename command into your text file it'll be the batch file. Or import to excel and export after adding 2 columns.

Umm, turn off/unplug everything else in your house and check the meter on the back wall? Oh, that's a hardware device.

Do you mean by software? or by calculation?

IMO, no is the only possible answer.

I'll let you know if they do that next week. Maybe I have an effect on profits with my 10 gal tank... 8)

First guess would be software - driver update, remove/reinstall, etc.

Could be the transmitter too, in which case you're screwed (at least to me who still prefers wires) :)

There is a type of UPS that will guard against that kind of strike. Almost any UPS you can buy today at reasonable prices is NOT one of them however.
