Re: AMD Graphics Card Issue After Latest Windows 10 Update

I'm voting for a blown VRM on the GPU card as the cause. It would account for a fried odor and total device failure without obvious evidence of a GPU overheat. As for the timing, call it coincidence, or else blame the reboot cycle after the update for exposing a failure that was about to happen anyw...

It's not clear to me what order things occurred. Did you... ...have a working audio device under Windows 7, then you upgraded to Windows 10, and now it's not working? Re: University (and beyond) laptop

However, those docking port adapters can actually be more expensive than some monitors (the cheapest one Dell bundles is $160). Would I be losing anything if I just connected anything to a TB3 dongle ($60-70 max)? If not, then can you recommend any TB3 dongles? Not in particular, but if you want so...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

My house hates me. Get up this morning and notice the HVAC blower is running a lot but not getting cold. Find the outside unit attempting to start for a couple seconds and then shutting down. After troubleshooting a bit it seemed to be a baked-out motor capacitor ($25), but ever try finding one of t...

Re: University (and beyond) laptop

Hi all,I was searching around on Dell's outlet website and managed to find a Dell XPS 13 9365 2-in-1 that managed to fit most of my criteria. It has 16 gigs of RAM, a 512 gig ssd, the QHD+ touch screen that dell sells (3200x1800), is convertible (like the names says), and costs $990. With the 17% o...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

Aaaand the water heater supply is done, finally have quarter-turn ball valves for the cold water inlet and the kitchen icemaker tap. I was going to leave the hot water outlet alone but bought the hardware just in case, and that turned out to be a great idea. The dielectric union on the cold water si...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Our house (built in the '80s) has one GFCI in the garage for the garage and all outside outlets, and one in the master bath for all of the bathrooms. With the price of copper these days, it's probably cheaper to just install separate GFCIs than run all that extra wiring. The NEC will get you first....

Re: Hard Drive going south...

I've never seen any evidence OCZs failure rates were due to anything except dodgy firmware. Any sources? If OCZ started buying wafers at the same time they started having serious problems on the low-end lines, that would actually make a lot of sense. They were operating in move-fast-and-break-thing...

OCZ were a worst example of this-using flash that should have gone off to $1 pen drives, result was around 60% failure rate on some models............................. Eh? Last I knew, OCZ's problems were mainly due to serious flaws in their firmware, particularly with SandForce controllers. Where ...

I managed to get windows loaded on an older drive and once I did that I was able to get everything off the drive. Windows won't scan it and won't fix. Finally rebuilt the rat's nest of 1974-vintage water supply copper and valves under the kitchen sink. In particular, the dishwasher shutoff did nothing of the sort, and based on accruing evidence, I'm pretty sure said appliance is on death row. Have a clean row of quarter-turn valves now, and my wif...

I've also been told that my ~45 year old furnace isn't ideal for air conditioning. For these reasons (plus overall cost), I've ruled out central AC......The mini split, on the other hand, would set me back $3000+installation. How certain are you that your 45yo furnace will hold out until you can af...

Today I learned I've been running my desktop, monitor, the Internet gateway, and a horde of small devices off an outlet that was wired wrong: hot and neutral were reversed. Your description of Chicago "tamales" made all of the Trans Pecos, NM, and Arizona collectively hate that city. It's only the hot dog stand fast food ones that are like that. I guess the first mistake would be trusting a hot dog stand that offers to sell you a tamale. Got to admire the ra...

Re: Ticking and Popping Sound

The problem with fast boot is that it basically blocks you from doing a proper reboot of the machine. From what I gather, rebooting with fast boot enabled is about the same as putting your PC to sleep mode and then waking it up again. Many drivers have issues with sleep mode and if they go into an ...

Not sure I would be looking at a dGPU for the application described. Also, is Acer's support still poor like it was a few years ago? OTOH, an FHD display is nice if connecting to an FHD TV or projector, since you can get display continuity regardless of whether you're mirroring or extending. Since i...
