Re: Gelsinger, eh?

The narrative, largely rehashed in the thread above, was that Rambus conspired with Intel to take over the memory industry via Intel's Netburst architecture, and submarined patents behind JEDEC's back to subordinate the traditional DRAM makers. But there were some articles about Rambus and the JEDEC...

How old is your Brother, anyway? Is it possible it just needs a driver update to get current? We have two Brother units here, one plain-jane LAN-connected laser (3yo) and an MFP I purchased in March when it became clear our office was going to shutter indefinitely. Both are accessible from iOS devic...

Interesting management shakeup I don’t mean that as flippantly as it might sound. Effective management requires setting your ego aside and letting others shine and it’s about facilitating productive collaboration. On average, the ladies might be better at that. Or, you get a Carly Fiorina. Could go...

Quick take: If you want a quick kick for your gaming but aren't planning to start running high resolutions, buy the new GPU now and keep using the CPU you've got. If you're not in a hurry or you want to start gaming at high resolutions, hang on a little longer and see what it would take to rebuild t...

Then you need to define budget. You're looking at about a grand to $1500 for a high-quality 1080P unit with a laser source. The 4k versions start around $3k: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Advanced-Laser-Projector-S718QL/dp/B073P6Y5KM/ You can go way lower, of course, but the light output may or may no...

Re: VM_W8.1/32x activated to W10/64x activated ?

It's been a while but as far as I remember, there is no in-place upgrade from Windows x32 to x64, and a quick Google search seems to confirm it. To get x64 while preserving the Windows 8 key I believe you would first have to upgrade Windows 8 x32 in place to Windows 10 x32, then do a clean reinstall...

This x2. You can buy or build a desktop which will exceed that laptop on all specs (and meet the use case you've described) for around $1k, but the suggestions you've already gotten are pushing into the $1.5-2k range.

I let it sit for a day, 13.0V (unloaded). 30 mins of city driving including 3-4 starts, I think it was 12.8V (loaded, car of...

Re: Low-amp car battery chargers

BTW, right after disconnection the battery was 5V, a day later 8V, now 9V. "Recovery voltage" is a common phenomenon for an unloaded unit. As long as there is exposed plate lead anywhere in the cell, and acid of sufficiently low pH, the chemistry still wants to make around 2V/cell. But if...

MeerKT - deep cycle batteries are particular about their heat range. They live/store better when they live in a warmer climate. I know it sounds goofy, but this is what my Interstate Battery dealer told me years ago - and while it may be incorrect information, it will surely allow the battery to li...

The peculiar thing which had me scratching my head is that the WD external drive and the respective 2 cables don't maintain a USB 3.0 connection and drop to USB 2.0 only when paired with each other. The WD drive using other cables and the suspicious cables connected to different drives work just fi...

Re: USB 3.0 WD drive recognizes some cables only as USB 2.0

Sounds like a combination of marginal cables and a marginal USB implementation on the drive. Could you elaborate? If the two devices can't maintain enough signal integrity to maintain a USB-3 connection with each other, they'll drop back to USB-2 rates, which are slower but also less sensitive to t...

Re: Encoding drops 3 cores by 600Mhz if in background?

Did you try running the same encode twice, once each way, to see if the encode is actually slowing down? If the encode rate is actually dropping, you have a problem. If the system is doing the same work with less power and noise when minimized, you have the opposite of a problem.
