Re: Read these security tips for Android but are they enough?

When you say deal with does that mean you pay their fees Basically yes. In general the more popular of these apps want to avoid the risk of being reported to google for outright blackmail so they use things like: "oh you want your app whitelisted? You must understand that there is a long list ...

Re: Read these security tips for Android but are they enough?

I'd like to emphasize that "security software" for mobile devices are all garbage.  I worked a while ago on a fairly large international Android app (100m+ users) and we constantly had to deal with the various companies behind these programs. Their business model is to blackmail other app ...

Re: Folks from India are trying to scam me!!!

if you are using Android phones, there are a couple of apps that are quite good at screening scam calls. I'm using Truecaller which is imo the best one. You can choose if you want to silently just drop the call or flash a big red warning on screen when a number triggers. What makes it good is that t...

Re: Is freelancing supposed to be this hard or do I just suc

Wouldn't you assume this isn't true in companies such as, say, Intel? At least in the higher than entry-level positions. I was a bit harsh maybe :) I dont mean everyone is a fool, just that incompetence exists everywhere. And pretty much everyone goes through a period where they feel way out of the...

take Morphine's list to heart, it is excellent. Most of all this point: Another point: if there's a popular expression that's absolutely true, it's "the cobbler's son goes barefoot." You think that the other companies (big ones in particular) do everything really professionally and correct...

Re: Is freelancing supposed to be this hard or do I just suc

I work as a freelance developer and some general advice is that places like Upwork/oDesk are not good places to find contracts. They represent least-effort on all fronts: most buyers have no contacts of their own, they just blindly put offers on there, and most sellers/contractors throw their resume...

Re: New recommendation for wireless range

I had a similar problem in my new house. I didnt want 2 separate networks so I ended up putting a wireless switch upstairs and connecting it to the router downstairs using a PoE connection. I had to try various power outlet combinations to find the best one but now I get around 700Mbit between the s...

Re: Are these Apple techs serious?

Having many apps "running in the background" may affect battery life slightly, mostly if they read lots of GPS data. But even then, what apps can actually do in the background is strictly regulated and a backgrounded app is *not* running full-speed, it is frozen and woken up periodically (...

The channel I used to watch doesnt have F1 anymore and the only other one I could get is satellite only so not really an option for me. Sucks but I have bought the official iOS app this year (much more reasonable price for 2014, about 10 USD, used to be 50 or so) so if I cant find any live streams I...

Re: SONY VR Headset Really...

I have zero faith in Sony as a company. No way they have produced something good in so short a time. I am sure they have some great engineers down in the ranks but from what I have seen the last decade(s) the company as a whole has no culture of innovation at all. One could hope that they have just ...

Re: Latency; Nagle's Algorithm

I doubt it would do you much good. A well designed program will already turn Nagle's on/off as needed (on *nix by setting TCP_NODELAY on the socket connection). Nagle's performance depends very much on a program's individual communication patterns i.e. order and size of reads and writes. Forcing it ...

Re: High Resolution Monitor Worth It?

Thanks for chiming in everyone. I'm not sure where this conversation got pushed towards lightboost and what not, but it is fairly unimportant to me. I play mainly Eve Online, BF4, and War Thunder. Games that while they are a bit twitchy, will likely be totally fine with a tad bit of lag. Not a prof...

Re: BF4 Mantle Thread

You really need to take a look on how games are made, because the workload suddenly doesnt double because you are using an different rendering path. You realise that is already done in part with various version of DX, PhysX effects, OGL vs DX on games that support both. In DICE case the engine deve...

depending on your feelings for Apple you might consider an Airport Extreme. It only has 3 ethernet ports but the Wi-Fi is excellent and I have never had a problem with it. Before I have used d-link, netgear, and Asus (mostly their cheap-to-mid level gear) and often had problems with clients dropping...

Re: NAS recommendations

I have a Synology 414 which with 4 drive bays is too small for your requirements but I will vouch for Synology as a brand. Even the cheap 414 (around $400) has 2 GigE ports which can be aggregated, and supports raid 1,5,6,10 and more (I run 4x WD Red 3Tb in Raid10 for 6TB effective space) as well as...

Re: 1440p vs 1080p

This is optimistic, and I hope you're right, but the cynic in me says it will never see adoption and LCDs will be superseded by another display technology before G-Sync (or similar) becomes widespread. As I understand it G-Sync solves a problem not limited to just LCDs. All display technologies suf...

Re: 1440p vs 1080p

I found another $50 savings on the monitor. That ought to leave enough funds available to get to the performance level of a Radeon R9-290 or GeForce GTX780. http://techreport.com/review/25611/nvidia-geforce-gtx-780-ti-graphics-card-reviewed/12 Hm. $332 +18½ shipping or $399 +17¼ shipping for a 2560x1440 IPS LCD monitor isn't going to break your budget. Thanks for the links. Unfortunately my issue isn't really monitor price/model but rather if going 1440p forces me to buy something better than the gtx770 :) I think it does but maybe I should ...

Re: 1440p vs 1080p

However, G-Sync is being marketed as a "gamer" feature and "gamers" (stereotypically speaking -- that is, the ones likely to buy into marketing) have no idea what kind of panel is in their monitor, and IPS panels *are* more expensive, unless you go for one of the cheapie e-IPS, ...

Re: 1440p vs 1080p

G-Sync will not be on an IPS monitor any time soon, nor will truly native 120hz. There are some IPS that can be overclocked to 120hz (and higher), but they look rubbish because the panel's response time can't keep up. If you want IPS, forget about G-Sync, backlight strobing ("LightBoost")...

Re: 1440p vs 1080p

I'd say your real choice should be between TN vs. IPS. If you have a higher resolution monitor, it can still run at non-native resolutions, and you can always turn down a couple settings in favor of keeping a whole lot of detail. Since you're probably going to use the monitor longer than the hardwa...

Re: 1440p vs 1080p

A 770 is hardly "skimping", but I know what you mean. For around the same price as a 770 you can pick up a Radeon 280X, which is less likely to fall victim to bandwidth constraints, and more able to make use of its larger 3GB memory, which may prove relevant (along with Mantle support, pe...

Re: 1440p vs 1080p

thanks for the comments! I hadnt really considered bandwidth limitations for the 4GB variant, thats a good point. Also, I don't demand 60+ FPS all of the time, i'm content with 30+ (I think) so maybe the 770 will be ok for 1440p. But I really dont like that "maybe" :-) I'll probably buy a ...
