Re: Now that Zen has saturated market... Is it safe to say AMD has returned to form?

Which form? The challenge for AMD is not just catching up, which they haven't yet done, but also keeping up . This is where companies like Intel and Nvidia differ: they continue to execute. Further, they've been competing well with themselves, absent real competition from AMD. I don't know how much...

Re: Anyone remember how to fix Windows 98?

I have to admit, I assumed this was a bad DIMM or disk, but your diagnostics seem to indicate that's not the problem. Installation of a DOS game breaking Windows seems far fetched... the only way I can think of this happening would be... 1. If the DOS game installation put something in your config.s...

Re: The Nintendo Switch is pretty great

I thought BOTW, which i beat, was a classic nostalgia pitch held back by underpowered hardware giving you a basically empty world made much larger than it should have been for no other reason than to have a "large world." It's not as good as the witcher 3 in any metric, but is ranked much...

I think from seeing you two recent posts, that you seem like a really insecure person who tries to gain self worth by your choice of technology platforms. Chill out man.

Re: Nissan/Infiniti VC-T engine - variable compression

It's kind of amazing how much effort and money continues to be spent improving the combustion engine. A device that has long exceeded any operational requirements and will soon be deprecated. Our children will think of combustion engines the way we think of mechanical watches - an interesting, retro...

Re: DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem

One small complaint I had about the SB6141 - the LEDs were insanely bright. Easily the brightest I have seen in a consumer electronics device and by far the brightest thing in my bedroom at night. I liked the device a lot and was not planning to replace it until the lightning killed it, but I can't ...

Wirecutter Cable Modem Reccomendation

I had this one, and it worked like a charm at 90-100mbps. Unfortunately, it got lost in a lightning hit. This time I bought a Netgear modem/router hybrid to save space and clean up cabling. Both worked very well with Comcast.

Re: Warcraft film, hopefully no spoilers

Why anyone would think releasing a Warcraft move in 2016 is a good idea is beyond me. A new Warcraft game hasn't come out in a decade, the MMO is 12 years old and well past its prime with a dwindling player base. On top of that, the Warcraft lore is some of the most generic middlebrow fantasy you ar...

Re: So what GPUs are entirely obsolete now?

It is outright arrogant to expect everybody needs to run their games at maximum in-game settings at uber-high resolutions, AA/AF etc to get the "full" experience. I don't expect anything from anyone. MY opinion is that anything less than 8GB is a waste of money. You have a different point...

Re: Anyone Play Dark Souls for PC?

Well, at 15 hours in, you are still a complete noob to the game and it will seem inscrutable and daunting. You will be moderately experienced at around 100-150 hours, and the decent PvP players are all 500+ hours played. Dark Souls does not have a typical RPG learning curve where things get graduall...

Re: Luxury upgrade? Please offer ideas...

I'd get the GPU and SSD. Both of those will give you a noticeable improvement and future-proofing, with no real downsides. The Eyefinity setup is obviously cool and exotic, but as Chrispy said, it's also not without some hassle. I think moving to an SSD for boot/apps/game is the biggest single impro...

Honestly, "photophiles" (for lack of a better term) are the new audiophile. No, not really. The problem with audiophiles is that the differences that they seem to percieve in audio quality are not noticable to most people, and often, they perceive differences that science says cannot real...

Re: Advice for 2 Newspaper PCs

If you think that these PCs will be used for 3-4+ years, I would recommend downgrading the GPU, and upgrading the RAM to 8GB. The apps you are listing are all very memory intensive, and in my experience, having extra RAM helps a computer limp along for the last year or so of its upgrade cycle. You h...

Re: SSDs and Ramdisks? Are ramdisks necessary?

Not only are RAM disks not necessary, except for a few very unusual circumstances, they are a big waste of time. As has been pointed out in this thread, Windows will use almost unused memory as a file cache. This is why the second time you load a program, for example, it is nearly instant. In Window...

Re: New Build, finaly

A couple of notes. I would go with a Seasonic or Corsair PSU, even if you have to go with a lower wattage. i.e. I would rather have a 600w Seasonic than a 750w Antec. I don't think Antec PSUs are horrible, but if this were my computer, I would want better. Make sure if you're going with 8GB, that yo...

There is no conspiracy. Try using WordPerfect 5.1 again, and I think you will understand where those clock cycles are going. The biggest difference IMO, is managed programming environments and automatic memory management. They have slowed down execution quite a bit, but have the benefit of making pr...

Re: Windows Vista - will 32 bit recognize 8gb of memory now?

There are very few reasons to install a 32-bit OS on a modern computer today. The only ones I can think of are a requirement to use an older application that is incompatible (virtualbox instead?) or an old piece of hardware with no 64-bit driver. For 90%+ of users though, 64-bit is the way to go.

Re: Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines Blurry Textures

IIRC, even with the unofficial patches, you need to reduce your RAM below 3GB to get the high res textures. There are switches you can apply using MSConfig to limit the amount of RAM the OS sees, this worked for me, though it was pretty annoying. - In XP, it's the BOOT.INI tab of MSCONFIG, under adv...
