Re: i5 6500/ASRock/DDR4 upgrade

Thoughts on 4x8gb vs 2x16gb? I'm used to the idea that you can easily add sticks of memory later on but is that not as easy now with DDR3 and DDR4 faster speeds? Also OCing better with the smaller sized sticks? Or will more sticks mean that it is more likely for one of the sticks to hold back OCing ...

Re: i5 6500/ASRock/DDR4 upgrade

An edit to my post above, I currently have 8GB (4x2GB). I wrote 4GB by mistake. Might I suggest going down to 16GB of DDR 3000 RAM to save some cash and get that CPU upgraded to a 6600k? Will the faster Ram and CPU help that much with performance? I realize I would be getting those if I wanted to ov...

i5 6500/ASRock/DDR4 upgrade

I have a PC that needs an upgrade. Q9300, Abit IP35 and *8GB DDR2. (edited) I could use a faster machine and it's also starting to have some stability issues. (Since about the time I upgraded the RAM this past year. Although the BIOS menu looks corrupt...but back to the topic of NEW PARTS!) I'm thin...

Re: Motorola XT1575 Unlocked Moto X Pure Edition

I should add, on a weekends when I don't have much going on I am on my phone a lot more and the battery doesn't last like it does during the work week. 9am-5pm and I'm at 25%. But that is with more long blocks of screen time and file uploading on top the normal use. Either way, I'm on wifi most of t...

Re: Motorola XT1575 Unlocked Moto X Pure Edition

The new Nexus phones look like they can easily sim swap and run on Verizon though too, right? I bought the Moto X PE as soon as champagne came back in stock with white front and red leather. I had the 2013 Moto X previously (plastic back). It is listed as MOTOROLA - XT1575 on my verizon account. No ...

I see a lot of stuff in retail reduced in price cheaper than steam. But then there are steam deals as well. Your pick.

Re: Basic fan cooling

My PC is pretty minimal and I just have a case fan directly above the CPU heatsink shooting air up with low rpm (P180 mini). So air just casually comes in all vents on back, front etc. But if you have a hot heatsink on a passive GPU you wouldn't want air flow to be far from that hunk of metal. I thi...

The holes for the front fan look like 80 or 92mm to me. I'd vote leave it as side.

Re: Want to upgrade a low-power rig, but options seem limite

Just to give ya an idea of idle power. My desktop idles at 21w with the PSU listed below but with a plain Antec 430w was idling 29w. Although I don't remember what load is usually and I don't have my kill-a-watt hooked up atm. Intel i3 530 CPU Intel DH55TC motherboard 4GB Kingston DDR3 RAM Toshiba 2...

Re: New PC, upgrade or just change the config?

Anyone familiar with these two boards?
MSI H55M-E33
Intel DH55TC

I've noticed some complaints about the MSI waking up from sleep (fixed with future bios update?) but the Intel is not laid out as nice, iron chokes etc.

Re: New PC, upgrade or just change the config?

Seems between the microATX boards I've seen reviewed, gigabyte and asus come with slightly higher power usage over Intel, ECS, and MSI boards. Probably because of extra features and chips to be powered. The only feature I really could use is 10/100/1000 LAN. The display outputs might sway me. Just h...

Re: New PC, upgrade or just change the config?

I saw the post here about low voltage sticks and it got me thinking. What do you think would impact power usage more? volts, size of the sticks or speed? Not many benchmarks show 1333 noticeably faster than 1066. I could 2gb or 4gb depending if I thought I would do video encoding on this machine but...

Re: New PC, upgrade or just change the config?

Yeah, the power savings will not fully pay for the price of the PC within a short time. But I am looking the total price for a basic desktop PC taking into account the power usage as part of that cost. Consider a $300 PC that uses 65w @ idle (+the cost of power over 4 years) vs a $400 PC that uses 3...

Re: New PC, upgrade or just change the config?

I know I'm double posting but I wanted to update some figures. I would entertain the idea of underclocking my Q9300/4850 if it wasn't for the fact that I would still have just 1 PC at a desk and my wife and I would still have to share. hehe And if I did move the A64 to the desk, I'm not sure how smo...

Re: New PC, upgrade or just change the config?

I think I was using a review showing a q9300 w/8800gt for my idle power numbers (160?). And if I went to a low power desktop being the machine always on then it would be with intergrated graphics (load numbers while playing video, CPU mostly idle). The 129 watt number seems a bit more accurate since...

New PC, upgrade or just change the config?

I'd really like some suggestions about possibly getting a basic desktop or upgrading my HTPC. Since I'm not really going for performance but it will be on most of the time I'd like to make sure it is low power. I'd like to have a basic low power system for basic desktop stuff for my wife and I. (Usi...

Thanks for the response. Sounds good. I've got an Antec SU380 in my HTPC and I am looking at the SeaSonic S12II 330 for the server. Also, I've got Win7 and XP licenses. Would either OS be more favorable on a server or HTPC? Thinking about transfer speeds because of this benchmark . And do you think ...

Re: HTS for HD audio/PS3

I went ahead and got the Onkyo SP908 set. Works very well. Although I have to turn the volume up a bit for them to be loud which I guess is because the included speakers are not that efficient. But the receiver has standard speaker connections and is a nice one so I'll be able to easily upgrade my s...

Re: HTS for HD audio/PS3

I've been looking at the Onkyo SP908 now as well. That would be killing my budget though. Does what I'm looking for and seems to have good speakers. I'm guessing a lot better than the Sony SS2300?

The Onkyo SP908 is their 605 receiver matched with their 750B speakers.

You won't notice much of a difference. I believe we are hitting the point of diminishing returns with audio technology. Anything that can be done now may give an improvement, but it would be so slight that no one will be able to distinguish the difference with the exclusion of some idiot savants. T...

Re: HTS for HD audio/PS3

Thanks for the replies. :) Hi Pegasus, I have a similar situation at home (wanted some sort of DTA-MA soundtrack into my 5.1 setup at home). I'm fairly sure the PS3 can send out 5.1 PCM over optical, unless I am mistaken and didn't see the reciever properly (will check tonight). Best option IMO is t...

HTS for HD audio/PS3

I'm not all that familiar with audio specs but I have been reading a lot about them so I could try to find a system. My goal is to be able to play lossless tracks off of Blu-ray (Dolby TrueHD, DTS MA and uncompressed PCM) on a budget. I know my options are few at ~ 400. 5.1 is fine. It's a 13x16 roo...
