Re: TR BBQ XVI 8/10/19 - Official Thread

Yeah, CPUs are very small, and very portable. Anything since ihs were introduced makes an awesome keychain, too.

I got some things I have to do with the bike (panniers and some sort of additional seat padding), but at least work/PTO is not in my way this year. As close as I can get to a promise.

zgirl - My daughter still waxes rhapsodical about the ribs I brought back last time, which considering her age and the number of years involved, is a pretty amazing endorsement.

Re: No... not him! Don't tell me they got him too!

I would write up some stuff I'm working with, but my content would probably work better at Phoronix than TR.

Then again, some of the very best Destiny 2 content on the web is consistently put up by a guy at FORBES, of all places.

Re: Wisdom teeth removal - share your experience and tips

Depends on how much they opened it and how deep they went. If it's fairly superficial, you can probably go light on the maintenance. If they dug deep, go back to full preventative care.

Your dentist is a good ask, though, as noted above.

Re: Recommandations for DIY NAS HDDs

Oh, I have two RAID-6 arrays, I trust a lot of data to them and am happy with the performance (well, technically they are ZFS RAID Z2, but same difference). I wouldn't use SMR drives on any array that needs XOR calculations or metadata updating on a regular basis. Those are murder for SMR.

Re: Recommandations for DIY NAS HDDs

Edit: The SMR drives aren't terrible if you know what you're getting and plan accordingly. My machine hosting an SMR mirror for backups is slower than any of my other arrays, but that's fine, since it's usually network-limited. I went SMR because it was cheaper per-TB than the other options at that...

Re: Change in Plans - I would like to *Replace* my faded American Flag

The official Boy Scout method as practiced and recommended by national, is to respectfully disassemble the flag, so that it no longer is a US flag, before burning the components. Specifically the stripes are turned into strips and the field can optionally have the stars cut out, picked out, or other...

Re: Change in Plans - I would like to *Replace* my faded American Flag

Please be sure to dispose of the old one properly. I doubt it's an issue, given the way you spoke about your old flag, but there are people who just think you ball it up and chuck it in a dumpster.

Re: Recommandations for DIY NAS HDDs

I've got 10*2TB of mixed parentage in my small server, 10*4TB of Hitachi in my Plex server, 2*8TB SMR Seagates in a mirror for backups, and 2*4TB WD Blacks in a "high performance" mirror in a spare PC for safe and fast storage of stuff I'm working on. I can tell you with about a dozen year...

Re: I would like to refresh my faded American Flag

I have an open weave nylon (I think) US flag only the red bars have faded. The whites and blues still look great. I want to resist our throw-away society, and to some extent my own predilections. Is there a safe way to bring the reds back to their intended brilliance, to clean the rest of it, and t...

Re: 1080 ti upgrade

Wasn't overclocked till recently, aside from some multiplier dickery that Gigabyte did behind my back. Was supposed to be 4.0 base, 4.4 single core turbo, and I'd catch it at 4.4 all core turbo whenever my settings got reset. I recently had my 1080 Ti FE's heatsink fail, so I drowned the whole rig w...

Re: 1080 ti upgrade

So I ran the GTX 970 for a good long while, and then the 1080 for almost a year, and a 1080 Ti now, on a 4790K. I have a friend across town still living on a 2500K and an RX580. When I went from 1080 to WQHD, that prompted my switch from 970 to 1080, and it was worth it. When I got a proper UHD moni...

Also I built this PC specifically to be a maxed out Netburst machine. The spare C2Q came with the motherboard. Man, I guess I suffered more during the NetBurp era than you did. I literally have a desk drawer full of Pentium Ds and late model Presshots, and I'm happy knowing that they rot silently, ...

Re: Can solder under IHS "go bad"? should I delid?

Anything can go bad. If you're tried multiple coolers, replaced the thermal paste, and checked the seating for good contact then I think you may be on the right track with your theory. As far as fixing it goes, you could always fry it up in a pan to reflow the solder! https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

I am still amazed that they made it work with that many characters. Weren't we saying that about the original Avengers film? Also, they're mainly getting away with it because Thanos is the protagonist of this film. Obviously not the good guy, but giving him the story means that everyone else ...

I have to downgrade to maybe. I burned some PTO unexpectedly about a month ago in the hospital, and I no longer have enough to cover all the things I need to do this summer. TRBBQ is dangerously close to getting the axe just based on the number of days off needed. I'm sorry, guys.

Four years and change, that's got to be pretty close to the record for a thread necro.

And for the record, Keith was running a K6-2 or a K6-III at that time. He might have just gotten onto a Duron or Athlon, but I don't think he had, when the AC incident went down.

Sweet. I have a nice big tent, just have to figure out how to mount it on the bike safely. Will update more as we close in. In the past I've used empty 2L bottles for sand stakes. Can just fill them with sand or water and bury them, use the spout side to tie off to. And in the "small friggin wo...

No way. It was CA2, with that elevator scene, and then the whole 'enemy within' aspect. The whole MCU spun on its axis for that movie.

Aug 18? I'll warm the bike up. That ought to be prime. Still have spots to throw a tent? On the beach mebbe? I would like to rsvp for sidewalk/driveway parking for the bike, if at all possible. Anything solid would be good, otherwise I have to pack a chunk of 2x4 to put the kickstand onto.

Re: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus – PC Specs and Features

I don't understand trying to "get by" with a mid to low end GPU anymore. It's not like we're on 6 month cycles anymore, real new GPU releases seem to have fallen into an annual tick-tock, so you can easily get 2 or 4 years out of a graphics card anymore. New Colossus is pretty at UHD with...
