Re: Pet peeve - it's pronounced "herb" not "erb"

Interesting thread, in that I've had a pet peeve with announcers on TV saying "uge" instead of "huge". All I know is, I go "home" from work; I do not go "ome" from work.

You might want to try tdsskiller. It's Kaspersky's rootkit scanner. I've yet to run anything needing it so far, but it's in the toolbox.

I've had really good results using this tool on both WinXP and Win7:

Just download, run, and select the All Versions options. It will run for a while, but it should work.

The one thing a new card will likely come with is a warranty, which may (or may not) make up for the difference in price between used and new in the long run.

Yeah, eventually I want to start reloading, but I just picked up my first AR, and gotta have something to throw downrange with it. I'm waiting for a cousin to upgrade his station this summer and pick up his used equipment pretty cheaply.

I've been checking the sites mentioned since the thread popped up and wound up ordering 500 rounds from ammunitiontogo.com (thanks Paul!). Cabela's had a 200 round brick of Remington for $70, but nothing else compelling. I was mixing types and brands to get to 500 anyway, and most of the sites menti...

+1 on HP. We have 6500+ HPs at work, and while there are component failures from time to time, overall we've had very little trouble with them. The business desktops include a 3 year warranty, so no more paying for that either. (+1 on the ProBooks too; I've got a new 6550b sitting on my desk and it'...

I bought a Ruger a few years ago that I really like: http://www.ruger.com/products/pDE/models.html

Re: WP51 DOS & USB ports

You can redirect the LPT1 port to a shared printer on another machine like so: NET USE LPT1 \\server\shared_printer (from a command prompt) It might even work if you shared out your USB printer and then redirect the LPT1 port to the share (have never thought of trying that until now, so YMMV). I don...

Dr. Web CureIT is a good one. I had never heard of it until recently, and it worked like a charm on a heavily infected system (not mine!). The only thing is it can be slow sometimes.

Re: Burning CPU?

It just looks like your not getting a full 100% contact between heatsink and heat spreader; more like 99%. The 1% of the spreader that's slightly exposed is likely due to those two corners being rounded a bit. BUT, absolutely no reason to worry. The only way to "fix" it is to lap the top o...

Re: Small GPU

You could likely go with a low-profile 8400GS; we use HP small form factor PCs exclusively at work, and those that need a little more horsepower than the on-board Intel video get HP's version of the low-profile 8400GS, which appears to be a remarked (and priced up) Foxconn card. Something like this,...

Re: Sandisk Cruzer Titanium 4GB died

I've fixed a few that way (resolder the connector), but usually the symptom of a loose connector is that the drive just won't be recognized at all. Since Windows is "seeing" this drive, you may have some luck running some hard drive recovery tools on it to see if the data is still there.

Or you could try this:

It has bailed me out on more than a few machines and has only failed when the drive itself has been hosed or a SERIOUS infection has taken root.

There's lots of options for a NIC, not just on-board. You could add a PCI, ISA, or even parallel port NIC (yes, they made them, I have one somewhere) and transfer the data that way.
