Re: Endpoint Protection

I've been using Symantec Endpoint Protection for small business for years. Now that Broadcom has purchased them, they are even harder to deal with. I'm looking for input on a new solution. Has anyone used Sophos Endpoint protection? I need protecton for 35 computers that is good protection that doe...

Re: NAS builds - anyone want a topic on em?

You ever play with the video hardware passthrough? I'm about to give that a try soon, although I'm not using unraid so this may not be entirely useful. What I've read so far is that it's generally a bit more work than passing through a network controller, or something like that. It's also a bit eas...

I know a good number of the iXsystems crew. I work in the "enterprise" environment as my day job managing hundreds of PiB of data. You have literally zero idea what the hell you're talking about. FreeNAS is not "becoming legacy". TrueNAS is not a "rebranding" of anythi...

Re: NAS builds - anyone want a topic on em?

It is a standard enterprise NAS software package. It is overkill for home usage, but it is free though. Pretty stable as long as you aren't trying to do something crazy experimentation. I'm not sure 'overkill' and 'nas' are two words I'd ever use in a sentence. I mean I do have 9 3tb drives utilizi...

It's not a repair but I made this: https://photos.app.goo.gl/zH9pvPXLKVvL6zGM7 Yes it's another bookcase but it's also a door and in proper scooby-doo style, pulling a particular book forward releases the catch (well it will once I've figured the catch out). It only leads to a small cupboard and it...

Re: NAS builds - anyone want a topic on em?

The Thuban was perhaps the best AMD cpu I ever owned, 1055t. Hot as *hell* but never failed. It was my main desktop, then my HTPC, then an early version of my NAS. Since this is a light-duty server I have the CPU governor set to "conservative". Unless it's doing its nightly mirror update ...

The bearings in HD's are actually quite fragile. If you let them sit in one position for years, they will develop a flat spot due to gravity. Best practices are to (literally) rotate the dry storage drives every 6 months or so.

The last thing I fixed was my moms mower. My cousin and his son looked at it, they replaced plugs investigated wiring, and my cousin said 'the wires to the starter are wrong'. After my mom yelled at me for allowing that to happen I went to her house 3 days later. I did this. Primed it 3 times, pulle...

Re: WD external drives getting partially slow scan speeds after downloading files on them via torrent

You're correct. I should have specified Iron Wolf at first. Does WD have any drives that they say are SMR free? After all the brouhaha in the tech press, I believe they have updated their site to indicate which model numbers of internal drive are CMR and which are SMR. But I don't think this helps ...

Re: 6 years, 7 months of power on

Those drives probably pre-date the "race to the bottom" on quality. Enjoy while you can, newer drives are probably going to be worse in terms of reliability. Luckily I have 3 'spare' NiB 3tb hard drives sitting in the closet. A seagate, a toshiba, and a WD. I just hope the bearings haven'...

Re: WD external drives getting partially slow scan speeds after downloading files on them via torrent

Seagate enterprise drives do not have this. Get a IronWolf - no SMR. Not entirely true. Some of their enterprise drives are SMR, but they do (and AFAIK always have) mentioned it in the specs when this is the case. It was the consumer line where all the obfuscation occurred. And yes, IronWolf should...

Re: WD external drives getting partially slow scan speeds after downloading files on them via torrent

I'm afraid it looks like that HDD SKU is infected with shingles. :( It's SMR? Looks like it. Unfortunately Seagate isn't a solution either, since they also have a number of SMR drives in their lineup. And manufacturers have been known to switch the model of bare drive used in a given model of exter...

6 years, 7 months of power on

I am either the luckiest or most unlucky person on the planet. I have one drive in my NAS that has 6 years 7 months of power on time. I have 3 other drives that are exceeding 5 years of power on time. None of them have errors. I have 3 spare drives waiting for a failure - and can survive a double fa...

Fellow gerbils, lend me your brains. I'm the not-so-proud brand new owner of a dead ITX motherboard. The question is: what should I do with it? I was going to try to ebay it, but obviously that's out of the question. If it were bigger I might try to strip off all the components somehow and make ano...
