Re: Need Advice on External Equalizer

I read a review that said that Denon did the five channel stereo well.

But, I'm not sure what that means. Is that like a 5.1 setup, except it's just stereo?

Re: Need Advice on External Equalizer

I don't think using the Tape Monitor function is going to work. Apparently, the Denon won't pass a digital to analog signal in the way I'm trying to do it. The only solution appears to be the optical to analog converter. That way, the signal passes through the EQ before it gets to the receiver. That...

Re: Need Advice on External Equalizer

I hadn't thought of that, but I could see where it could work. I'd lose the digital signal, but I'm only listening to the receiver in stereo mode anyway. So, I'd not really be losing anything. It sounds like the tricky part in this is the TOSLink connection. The EQ itself would act as the pre-out ma...

Need Advice on External Equalizer

Hi guys. I'm trying to do an old-school type of thing with a modern receiver and an external equalizer. The problem I am having is that modern receivers no longer have pre-out and main-in RCA ports anymore. Back in the day, hooking up an external equalizer was cake. Now, it takes some real talent to...

Re: Did you know Win95 could run on 386?

Back in 1997, I had a 486SX that I had upgraded to a DX4-100 using the overdrive socket. I think I only had 8MB of RAM, though. The system would not boot, or even power up, with 16MB of RAM installed for some reason. It came with Windows 3.1, as they all did back in 1993 when I got the system. It wa...

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

Update: I installed 4GB of RAM in the system and I was able to find a copy of OS-X 10.11 (El Capitan) for $14. I did a fresh install and let the system update. It's a totally different computer now. Fully functional. It's not slow at all, which surprised me. I was expecting it to hang up a lot, but ...

I fixed a garage door opener which had a blown run capacitor. It's the second time I've had to replace the cap in the past year. Area has dirty power.

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

Thanks guys. It seems I am just low enough on the OSX version that I don't yet have OS access to the App Store. I've looked around for an image of Snow Leopard, but everything seems to redirect to the App Store. I wonder if it would be easier to simply use an image of El Capitan, if I can find one i...

I'll check to see how I can upgrade to Snow Leopard. I didn't consider that I may be too far back from 10.11, even for a fresh install.

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

The system is currently running 10.5. I can't even install Chrome on it, as it requires 10.10. I was planning on letting the kids use it for papers and stuff like that. So, nothing mission critical or anything like that. It's just been a bear trying to get the system up to something usable. I did in...

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

I'm having issues finding an image of OSX El Capitan.

The App Store tells me the OS image/installer is no longer available on the US site. I have not seen that the image is mirrored anywhere. Any ideas, guys?

It looks like the updates to the OS are still available, but not the installer.

Thanks!

It's truly amazing, and horrifying, just how far Holmes was able to get with ideas that were nothing more than science fiction, using lots of corporate-psyche buzzwords and cute catch phrases. The snow job she did on people who should have known better is most impressive. I'm unsure as to whether th...

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

I saw that one, but it's $60. I was hoping to get something a little cheaper. I'll check out ebay, although the listing I saw was sold out.

The $60 enclosure does look really nice, though. I take it the enclosure has to be Mac compatible?

Sigh. I guess with the latest USB standards, 1394 simply isn't relevant anymore, even at 800 speeds.

Anyone know where I might find a Firewire 800 enclosure? For cheap?

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

Thank you for the information. I was thinking along the same lines. Going to 4GB from a single GB should provide a noticeable difference, I would think. It looks like Apple provides the OS for free? I saw the download page, and there was no mention of payment. I have several SSDs laying around colle...

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

Well, I got the iMac for free, so there's that. The hardware is really not that bad. It's got a Core-2 processor, which is not that ancient. But, having never used OSX, I'm not sure how well it handles the hardware. Win7-Pro ran fine on about the same hardware. I can get a pair of 2GB RAM sticks for...

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

I think I saw a 4GB DIMM for the system. That would give me 5GB total, which would (hopefully) be enough to prevent page file swapping. I have no idea what OS is on it currently, but since the computer only has 1GB of RAM, I don't think it's El Capitan. If I upgrade to 5GB of RAM, would I be able to...

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

Until just last year, I used a workstation that I had built in 2009, which was not much faster than this system and it worked fine. Well, at least for surfing and light gaming. I just upgraded about a year ago. So, that was my thought about this system, that it might still be able to be used in a li...

Although I'm going to need to add more RAM. Does anyone know how many additional RAM slots there are? If there is only two, can you get to both easily?

New (for me) Apple iMac

Hi guys, I have just inherited an Apple iMac. I know next to nothing about Macs, other than they now run on x86 hardware. I could use some guidance from the masters of the art. The specific Mac in question is Model A1224. The EMC No. is 2210. I have not powered it up yet, but it looks to be unmodifi...
