Great question and I'm very interested in the answer, whatever it may be.

You can. (at least I know for a fact you can on AWS)

Re: Wisdom teeth removal - share your experience and tips

Not to be TOO pedantic, but "OP" should be asking the oral surgeons office, not necessarily the dentist's.

But yeah dude, treat it the same. Why would you even take the chance?

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

IIRC the ones with the really high failure rates were generally older drives, from back when Seagate definitely had some serious issues. We're talking class-action-lawsuit-inducing level of issues. Yeah, the old days were very bad in some cases. This particular drive, which had the highest failure ...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

The stats show they're essentially the same reliability as competitors, minus the shingled lines that are hit-and-miss. I also have over 10k of those guys in production, so I know their faults well. My own experience seems to be broadly consistent with this, assuming we're talking about relatively ...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

I know Seagate drives are cheaper a lot of the time, especially the consumer stuff, but I honest to goodness don't know why some many people buy them that are seemingly educated about much of the issues they've had in the past.

Re: Brand new CPU build for Cyberpunk 2077 (Budget Important!)

This isn't my particular situation, but I know sometimes pulling down 50-100GB down in a single day isn't an option for some people.

If you want to pre-order, then do it. Just don't get all pissy if the game turns out to be a dud.

Absolutely. This is the first game i'm pre-ordering since Skyrim (2011 I think?).

This just popped up to pre-order when I logged into Steam ... £50, realease date is 2020-04-15 (at least for now). OP, start saving now, in a dedicateed pot/account if you can, and come back and ask in February with an intention to build the machine in early March and have it stable and tuned ready...

None of this particular part of the discussion likely matters. I'd be VERY surprised if he didn't plea (regardless of which statute they get him to plea to) before it goes to trial.

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

Sounds like HGST's seem to be the best reliability wise (at least based on Backblaze). Since HGST was sold off, how do you spot an HGST drive? Are all Toshiba's HGST? What about WD? Are all Toshiba 3.5" drives based on HGST designs? Yeah, good luck. Even if they are one company's design, WDC i...

Absooooolutely. And rightfully so. Ars is a Conde Nast property now. They SHOULD be careful, but IMO they do need to make a post on the site about it once they know the extent of the legal ramifications.

Re: Peter Bright of Ars Technica charged by FBI

Thanks for the reference. I read the charge again and you are correct. Hmm. I don't think the prosecutors are doing as tight a job as they are supposed to be doing. He's clearly guilty of something, but I don't think the particular law they quoted for this case is a slam dunk. It's probably going t...

Hate to be 'that guy' but y'all know me by now, lol. The evidence doesn't match this particular crime you quoted unfortunately. The cop was pretending to be an adult woman who was putting her children in sexually explicit situations, while Peter here mostly just accepted the offer. So Peter didn't ...

Re: Peter Bright of Ars Technica charged by FBI

Serious question to US/NY peeps: what's the expected sentence he's looking at, and will you keep him in your jails or try sending him back here? If he's found guilty as currently charged, I believe Federal sentencing rules call for 10 to life. Upon release he will also need to register with local a...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

Extremely low capacity 1-2TB? That's still a decent sized hard drive to me. I was mainly thinking of 4TB as a new drive to back up to (with separately bought enclosure), and that includes plenty of "growing into" room. I never was a huge data hoarder. Though this would also go for replaci...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

Unfortunately, the price premium of WD Blacks makes it harder to justify not going with a SSD instead. And in general, a HDD is gonna be less reliable than a SSD with the same warranty under normal use. Not that I really disagree on the reliability part, but beyond the extremely low capacity HDDs (...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

Aside from being a little pissed off at Seagate right now (for reasons unrelated to reliability), I'm brand-agnostic when it comes to HDDs. My selection rules for mechanical HDD purchases these days can be summed up as: 1. Make sure it isn't SMR. (Currently, this apparently means avoiding Seagate.....

Any opinion on Drupe for a dialer? It's apparently a notable player, and there's call recording integrated. Re: Good alterative Android apps for dialer, SMS?

So, a lot of apps are going to depend on your OS version (7 is getting pretty old - 9 is current and 10 is coming in the next couple months), your region (not sure if you're in the US?), and some other stupid BS Google imposes very likely. You're also not likely to get some updates for a lot of apps...
