Re: Spectre-Meltdown barricade

I was under the impression it uses Blink on macOS, but I could be totally wrong. edit: Derp, you said iOS and we were talking macOS. Yeah, I think on mobile it's Webkit or bust for iOS. Though that's not all there is to Chrome on iOS. I know there are lot of networking changes they made in addition ...

Re: Spectre-Meltdown barricade

Honestly, Safari is really the only usable browser on macOS with <=8GB or RAM already. It's insane. Google and Mozilla both need to do some serious work on Chrome and FireFox for macOS. It pains me deeply to use Safari.

Re: Chrome keeps crashing! Help!

No idea dude. I'd start by thoroughly uninstalling Chrome. Like go through the registry, appdata etc etc etc. It drops stuff in a ton of different places and data lingers if you don't get it all. I'm on W10 but Chrome has been rock solid for me for years, albeit using too much RAM IMO.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand the hardware requirement either. Not to mention hardware RAID can get really expensive, really fast. Have you looked at the smaller Synology and QNAP boxes? They're both decent enough. edit: FWIW, I figured OP meant things like the Dell PERC cards or the old LSI RAID ...

Re: Export Android SMS to TXT?

If you want it to be viable in court you need to have an eDiscovery firm do it. A text file of SMS/MMS means nothing. You should talk to a lawyer and see who/what they suggest. Could also possibly get a copy from your carrier, but that almost surely requires a court order (and a waiting period) too....

Re: PSU Wattage Question

Yup, the 550W G2's fan turns on at about 20% load, but doesn't even hit 50% fan speed until 40% load. That's pretty close to how most decent PSUs work these days. I still maintain that Seasonic is the best choice, with the Seasonic made Corsairs/EVGAs being a close second.

Ben, you better check yourself before you wreck yourself. I don't do anything but Twitter, and I mostly (mostly) use it for news stuff because it's almost always on there first these days. I don't really interact much on Twitter because I'm not popular and have like no followers, but that's fine. Le...

Re: PSU Wattage Question

Seasonic Platinum or higher for me. Platinum is usually 90%+ at 50% utilization, and their hybrid fan system is usually fanless until about 40%-50% utilization (depends on the model). I never hear my PSU fan turn on because by the time it does, my CPU or GPU fans are drowning it out. BTW, those Seas...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Just wait until you descend into the bowels of the T (Boston's subway system). It's the oldest underground system in the US and its age is patently obvious. It's smelly, noisy, and uncomfortable, and that's on the good days. Perhaps the best measure of the self-awareness of the system's problems is...

Re: High or low fps?

I shoot for 60 FPS minimum these days. I have a decent enough CPU and GPU to make that happen most the time. I also want the quality there too though so there are surely dips below 60 but I start to cringe a bit if getting close to 30 on PC. No thank you.

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Shortly after I moved to the Boston area, I was in central Cambridge and crossing at a crosswalk. I was smack in the middle of the street when I heard a squeal of tires and turned to see a woman driving out of a side road just behind me and to my right. She looked me straight in the eye, grimaced, ...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Oddly, I thought the drivers in Chicago were fairly tame compared to Boston when I have visited (4 or 5 times in total).

The only drivers i've seen in person that were close to massholes were LA drivers. It's nuts there.

Re: Looking to upgrade from my i5-3570K need some advice

Meh. I have two SSDs (one boot+programs or "apps" for the kids, one for Steam and all games) and one HDD for p much all media. I likely won't be changing that set up even if a 2TB SSD is 30 bucks. I like it that way.

Now, for you optical drive holdouts, y'all weird.

Re: Looking to upgrade from my i5-3570K need some advice

That may not be due to the extra threads, though. The i7s have more cache than the i5s as well -- the extra cache may be making up the difference. (We saw back when Scott benchmarked the 5775C that extra cache is beneficial in games, if you recall.) You're comparing apples and oranges here. 5775C h...

Re: Phone dilemma

Exactly why my wife is still on Verizon. Her parent's property is in the middle of nowhere and Verizon is the only signal that works. The Sprint network on my phone is just as bad as T-Mobile was in that it is unusable inside. It's da best. I've been spoiled. I have had Verizon, and the same phone ...

Re: Phone dilemma

T-mo is getting there! Their 600MHz and 700MHz spectrum is making a good dent. I'm also generally in urban areas so it's not a huge deal for me most of the time, but I live in KS so, y'know, there are issues I can't avoid at present.

Re: Phone dilemma

Yes and no. There are "loopholes" you can find using their financing options. If you spend certain amounts within certain time periods, you can get the 0 percent, but generally you're probably better off using the carrier financing if you're penching pennies like you said. Either way, I st...

That's all fine and good, but like I said towards the end of my post, there are financing options from Apple and Google. It's not as if you have to shell out the 800 bucks right up front anymore. Like I said above, it's more of a principle for me than real utility, though having an unlockable bootlo...

Oh that's true, but even then I bought my Pixel 2 through Verizon. It's silly to pay up front if they'll finance it interest-free. Funk, no no no no no. Avoid carriers at all costs. Ridiculous. Just like my Seasonic that came in a velvety drawstring bag inside the box, like I'm going to be hauling it around to LAN parties. Got the same bag with my Seasonic-sourced Corsair, and it's a really handy place to hold/store all of the modular cords I'm not currently using. Another hap...

I'm not really a fan of 17 inch "laptops" so my decision would be the P52 but that's just me. Hopefully you're plugging into an external display/keyboard/mouse most the time. It also appears the P71 has a 4K screen which I would not necessarily suggest. It's just not necessary IMO (I've do...
