Re: W10 Pro for Workstations

Sorta cool. But does it still not let you control when updates happen? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Doesn't say anything. It feels like they'd allow you at least the same controls Enterprise has? I have no idea. Also, let's not turn the thread into a W10 update hate-fest if we can avoid it. Saying it doesn't let you ...

Have another PSU to try?

My guess would be PSU and motherboard, in that order.

W10 Pro for Workstations

https://blogs.windows.com/business/2017/08/10/microsoft-announces-windows-10-pro-workstations/ Should make more than a few TR people happy. Hopefully doesn't cost a ton, and they allow upgrades from Pro/Home. (AT LEAST pro though) Highlights: ReFS (not clear WHERE ReFS support is though) NVDIMM supp...

The 3TB HGST Deskstar NAS drives I have been using, and put in many more systems have had zero complaints. Honestly, I'm not sure i've ever even heard mine.

They have 4/6/8 TB versions as well.

Just try one out. Find a re/e-tailer that allows 30 day returns or something (cough cough Amazon).

Re: Can a 144Hz display help reduce eye strain?

My experience is as follows... Dell U2410 (60Hz IPS) + Dell U2415 (60Hz IPS) 2011-2016 Asus PG279Q (165Hz AHVA/IPS) 2016- Present I enjoyed both setups, but I won't oversell the regular desktop smoothness. It's not nothing, but I won't sing praises of regular desktop use at 120/144Hz. It's great, if...

Re: Streaming frustrations

Nah, that's how it works for me too Waco. Throughout the house, AC/5GHz works better nearly everywhere. Once I'm out back on the patio or something I might switch over to 2.4. Really though, at least for me, 5GHz in my house is almost always faster even with a weak signal.

Re: Skylake X: Bye Bye Rings, Hello Mesh

It's a brand new platform Krogoth... Saying their platform is stable because it was 8 years ago with completely different chipsets, CPUs, and manufacturers makes no sense. But OK. And if we're going to compare this to K8/Operton days, Intel isn't in "serious trouble." In 2006, Opteron/AMD'...

Pretty good server article over at Anandtech intel-skylake-ep-vs-amd-epyc-7000-cpu-battle-of-the-decade Promising results for EPYC too. AMD's is offering more cores at lower prices and still winning a lot of the benches. :) Yeah, unfortunately for AMD though, the server space isn't quite as forgivi...

Sure, I could be more selective. But that would involve whittling things down a LOT, and I'd be constantly going, "Hmm, I haven't listened to X in a while... oh damn, that's not on the phone!" I get it. This is what happens to me once in a blue moon. I don't mind switching stuff out thoug...

pfffft at anything in 2017 that doesn't play FLAC. No cars fo' me. For completeness, I don't really convert to MP3 anymore these days... I do have LAME installed somewhere though (which works through Foobar if I want too). Then again, I really only play stuff on my computer (Schiit DAC+AMP) and my p...

Yeah I'm sorry but there is no way I would buy that phone in your situation. I do hope you realize you're likely to get no major revision Android updates. Hell, I think you'll be lucky to get security updates. I guess good luck.

I didn't see anyone post die size yet?

It appears the die (Vega only, no HBM) is roughly 25.90mm x 19.80mm = 512.82mm-ish. (almost cut off a sig fig)

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

Vega is definitely not just a die shrink of Fiji.

Even though the FE stuff hasn't been amazing yet, I still think we're looking at above 1070 in most stuff, about 1080 in some others, and maybe above 1080 in a few particular things where Vega excels. When is RX launch?

You should really try and come up with the money for Lightroom. It's going to be so so so so so much less hassle than the others, if the others even do have some features you want.

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

I don't think PCper's benchmarks are all that far off. That "demo" they showed in December showed whatever Vega silicon w/8GB of memory running "about" 60-70 FPS in Doom 4K (Vulcan). That's ROUGHLY on par with a 1080. Feels like that's about what we'll see. Above the 1080 in a fe...

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

I would not count on Vega (top o the line) using less power than 1080. That'd be pretty crazy engineering by AMD, but given the Polaris stuff, and GF process tech, including the chips we know that have been produced on it, there is very little chance they'll use less power than Nvidia at the same p...

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

The closer the RX Vega gets to launch, the more I feel like it's going to be a flop. Kinda makes me feel like AMDs engineers are diverted to Ryzen and the GPU team was left barebones to hobble along for a couple years. They may work together on some things, but RTG and the CPU teams are mostly sepa...

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

AMD keeping even with NVIDIA on power/performance is really a win for us. If both companies are at parity they'll have to compete on price in the short term, and find a way to increase generational price/performance in the longer term. I would agree with you if AMD were even close to Nvidia on effi...
