Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

To make up for the craptastic mess linked in the previous post, I give you Warren Haynes (of the Allman Brothers band) performing Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home with Joe Bonamassa. And Gov't Mule, which IMO, might be a better band. I know that's probably not a super popular opinion, but it m...

beep boop here we go https://www.amazon.com/Synology-bay-DiskStation-DS218-Diskless/dp/B075N1BYWX if you want a beefier CPU (and to bump the budget a tiny bit - though unless you're planning on storing any media and doing some streaming on the NAS this really shouldn't factor in too much) https://ww...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Just figured out that my supervisor's supervisor went to high school with my daughter (not the same class, but there was a year of overlap). He's got a yearbook with my daughter's picture in it. How's that for making you feel old? One of the hazards of being 50-something in the tech industry,...

Re: CDDA support in Linux music player apps (and JACK silliness...)

Oh yeah I know, it's just so reminiscent of past days of Linux sound BS I chuckled and typed it out anyway.

(to be clear, I'm talking like early aughts here. I remember spending hours upon hours trying to get sound working in 2001 or thereabouts)

She's my favourite too. I wish she could have hung with Tennant for his tenure.

Re: What shows are you recently watching?

Oh I have a question for the Who fans. Who is your favourite Doctor, and your favorite sidekick? Are you guys sure about your Series/Season numbers? Series 11 is just airing this year. Maybe you guys are talking old Who because, well, you're old. :) Doctor numbers, not series numbers. Ah, that's why...

Re: So, mechanical keyboards

As I was already heading to MicroCenter for other reasons, and since I have a lot of typing to do, I ended up buying a Das Keyboard 4 Pro with Cherry MX Browns. It's taking some getting used to by compared to the Blacks, but they at least have some pushback to them as opposed to the nearly non-exis...

Hell yes. Glad there are some Who fans here. And yeah, there is something for everyone in the "new" stuff IMO. I wish Moffat could have done more of the writing when Tennant was The Doctor. Matt Smith writing (Moffat mostly) + David Tennant is my Doctor Who dream team. Though I do like Mat...

Im still using 8.1 with a Start Menu add on, and every time I hear an anecdote like this I cringe at the thought of actually upgrading to 10. Is there some grand article that contains every hack and tweak that’ll make Windows 10 behave? Windows 10 really is not that bad. Especially with the last tw...

Re: DOS sees directories, Windows doesn't

Yeah, the Windows driver stack for optical drives is a bizarre beast. I have vague recollections of various issues arising because of problems with "upper filter" and "lower filter" drivers, and performing manual registry surgery to fix it. Haven't had to deal with that sort of ...

I don't want to derail the thread or deride your process for setting up your computer, but you really shouldn't use the setup CDs that come with motherboards or any other computer product unless absolutely necessary. Just download drivers from the sites that you require. Surely all of that stuff is ...

They'll better monetize Git Enterprise and it'll flourish. They wanted the name and recognition. I must admit, I'd be pretty fired up if they built a good issue tracker into GH Enterprise. We use paid Github and paid Jira, and while Github has been pretty stable from a usability perspective Jira ha...

I'm looking for an easy to use speaker for my folks gazebo. They'd prefer corded power, bluetooth connectivity is a must since they both use iphones. Decent sound, not over 150 or so? Well a 10nm 2+0 Lenovo lappy was released to the Chinese market and Intel normally starts off its next gen chips with something a little more spectacular than that so it's pretty obvious they are having issues with the process. I'm giving Apple the benefit of the doubt. Intel hasn't significantly increased single core performance in years. I've been nothing but impressed with just how fast the latest round of iDevices feel. Even full desktop sites render just as quickly on an iPhone as they do on a Kaby Lake laptop. It's ...

I'm guessing the 10nm situation is somewhere in between Charlie's exaggerations and "regular" production. He's always facetious and ridiculous for no reason, but not always completely wrong. And clearly Intel is having very serious issues or we'd have legit products by now (read: a year ag...

Reinstall from scratch. It's the easiest method to ensure you don't have trouble in the future. Also, stop screwing around with things you don't understand unless you have a good backup strategy first. :) The reason I have suggested this multiple times now is the OP deleted the system and recovery ...
