Re: New build with old GPU

Some great thoughts--thanks to all of you! The power supply I have on hand is 700W, so the power consumption shouldn't an issue, at least in the long run. So, between driver support and a small/marginal performance benefit, I think I'll go with the 470. The biggest advantage of the 470 right now ove...

New build with old GPU

I'm putting together a new Windows 10 system for mostly productivity uses (not gaming); most demanding use is probably photo editing (we have an application called Topaz that needs some GPU capability--the integrated Intel HD 4000 GPU in our current system isn't quite up to the task https://help.top...

Re: Data recovery

Well, all's well when it ends well. Good to hear :) Thanks! I'm sure this taught you a lesson! One copy, in one location, is never a backup. True. Though this was a bit of a weird situation where one drive failed, and as we were looking to address our backup deficiencies, a second (and relatively n...

Re: Data recovery

Well, we ended up sending the drive to Seagate Recovery Services June 13. Ten days later their lab in the Netherlands reports our data has been recovered, and 4 days later we have a 4 TB USB Backup drive sitting on our doorstep--literally. I wrote Seagate about the problem with leaving something of ...

Re: Data recovery

I've used OnTrack in the past. They are now KrollOnTrack. https://www.krollontrack.com/company/overview/ For data recovery, I would send my drive to someone who specializes in data recovery rather than someone who specializes in making hard drives. I've read some good things about Kroll and other 3...

Re: Data recovery

Well, they would know their own drives best, I would think. Is it one of the 3TB desktop drives from ~3 years ago (the ones which were known for insanely high failure rates)? If so, Seagate should be intimately familiar with the failure mechanism, and know how to best deal with it. Probably--date o...

Data recovery

We were having some problems with our linux media/data server--ended up being a older hard drive that was failing--was able to copy the data to another drive. A few months later I go to replace the failed drive, and I find the drive I had copied everything to, and had our previous backups, had a &qu...
